Seems to me that spousal support in this case is simply a punitive measure. Child support is understandable in virtually any case: the custodial parent necessarily incurs more expenses (although awards of $20k/month seem preposterous to me).

Spousal support seems to only be justifiable if one spouse makes material gains at the expense of the other. If Arnold forbade (in some fashion) Maria to work, I could see spousal support. But if she chose to do "public service" (euphemistic phrase for 'I'm a Kennedy and have no talent'), she shouldn't get anything.

Both were wealthy when they married; Maria is entitled (as I understand it) to half the wealth accumulated during the marriage. Not sure why she should get any more than that.

You raise an interesting point. She was "forced" to quit her job in the media when he ran for office, I believe. I don't know if the love child was conceived before he ran for Governator or afterward. But she might have a case, with his position forcing her to give up her career.

CA is a no fault state, but I think Maria is in the public sympathetic position. That might get her more support from judges. You are not supposed to have secret children with the maid. It is frowned upon!
