HOUSTON A convicted murderer is accused of killing his girlfriend, a young mother of three little girls, according to the Harris County District Attorney.
Ervin Jones, 39, is charged with murder in the shooting death of 22-year-old Robyn Hightower in southwest Houston.
HPD said around 10 p.m. on July 13, Jones and Hightower were arguing over the phone before he drove to her home, located in the 15700 block of Clarke Springs, and rushed into her bedroom.
The couple started arguing again, and at some point, police said Jones pulled out a gun and shot Hightower in the chest. She was rushed to the hospital by her brother, Christopher Branch, but doctors were unable to save her.
Meanwhile, Jones went to a nearby Shell gas station on South Post Oak and Beltway 8, also suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital for treatment, but was later arrested. He was being held without bond Tuesday.

If he was already convicted of murder, why was he on the street?

He was convicted of murder in 2003 and sentenced to eight years in prison, but he was released early. After his release, he was convicted of felony drug possession and two assaults on family members. 8 years for murder *and* released early. Justice isn't.

I read that. There is still no excuse why he should be on the street.

Really? If so, yet another case pointing to the only clear way to deal with convicted murderers....execution. It is the only sure way to prevent them from killing again. The people who run our legal system believe that ordinary people are not entitled to be sure that murderers won't kill again.

Why was he on the streets? And why—though one hesitates to “blame the victim”—would any woman, but especially a mother, have anything to do with a man with such a violent criminal past?
Liberals claim the death penalty doesn't deter murder. But there is no doubt: if this guy had been executed after his first murder, the woman would still be alive. Hope they get him this time.
