The only 2 reasons I can think of would be 1) that the far-left liberals are trying to do something that their base can be happy about; and 2) the Democrats are trying like the devil to make social issues a bigger issue for the 2012 presidential elections to detract attention from the disasterous economy.
It’s all about 2012. Feinstein is up for reelection. This helps Obama with his base.
