I'm not sure if the opening line in the article.."that 56% of families who usually take a summer vacation cannot aford to this year.." is actually correct.

There are many who can't affod to do so, but I suspect that the vast majority could still do so, but choose not to..they're limiting unnecessary expenditures, adding to savings, paying down debt..all of the above. This may signify a significant change in America's behavior..and if the consumer doesn't return, then the recession will take much longer to end..
