Serial killers entiteld to benefits, minister admits (UK)

Serial killers including Ian Brady and Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper could be claiming hundreds of pounds a year in benefits, it has emerged.

Murderers and sex offenders are able to claim incapacity benefit because they have been detained under the Mental Health Act, it has emerged.

It means they are entitled to claim up to £94.25 a week - adding up to nearly £5,000 a year.

Details of the scheme emerged in a Commons debate.

The Government is now reviewing whether all serial killers detained under mental health legislation should receive incapacity benefit.

Employment Minister Chris Grayling described the payments as an anomaly when he was asked if it was right.

Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe, now 64, received 20 life terms for the murder of 13 women and the attempted murder of others in Yorkshire and Greater Manchester.

O.K., just make sure they deduct the cost of the investigation, trial and imprisonment from the total.
