Two possible reasons: First, they want to belong to the in crowd - to bask in the approval of the crowd. Second, because they believe they are masters of the universe, they actually think that government can solve the problems they see. They don’t realize that government exists to perpetuate itself and its own power and that its inefficiency is exceeded only by its ineffectiveness and its ability to create unintended consequences.

You are spot on. So many of my corporate clients here in the bay area have a young work force driven by a need of being accepted into the hip crowd. Many want to ease their conscious by latching on to some cause for which they know little about.
