Catholics so often insist on reading Catholic ways of doing things into evangelical congregations and then flog the straw man that results. A Lutheran is far less likely to preface a moral comment with "my synod says" (in fact it is almost unheard of -- it's almost always "according to the bible") than a Catholic to preface an analogous remark with "the pope says."

Personally, I've never heard a Catholic say "The pope says..."

The only people I've heard say "The pope says..." are protestants, who then proceed to say something the pope never said.

Natural reason is not catty. I’m just floored that you can’t seem to make the logicical extension from one’s Catholic Shepherd to the Catholic laity, the sheep. Insult one, you insult all.
