The survey question the Dems used was probably something like "To save the economy, would you accept a tax hike on the richest 2%?" or some such.
I'd be willing to bet the polling question(s) didn't even include the phrase "tax hike". It was probably more like, "would you support revenue increases in addition to spending cuts to reduce the deficit?"
Of course, Reagan proved that revenue increases come from CUTTING tax rates, but in the Dim vacuum, they think that if you increase tax rates, taxable activity remains the same, so revenue increases. But, reality says otherwise.
