This reminds me that Lincoln's birthday was never
commemorated in the south when I
was in school. In fact, I don't think it was until Congress turned all those president's
birthdays into one and called it the generic ‘presidents day’.

Oh, really? Seems I remember people getting a holiday every year in February for Washington’s birthday because he was the first and a founder, Lincoln wasn’t. Prior to 1968, I worked in the private sector and we didn’t even get Washington’s BD off. We didn’t even get Good Friday off to recognize the crucifixion. We just got a paid day off on July 4th, Thanksgiving and Christmas. After 1968 and 1971 or so, when I went to work for the state, we always got President’s Day off. Which I liked because usually it fell around my birthday. IN the dark ages when I was in public school, I don’t remember getting anybody’s birthday off. And we certainly didn’t get spring break.
