Ridiculous.

You can't have fiscal conservatism without social conservatism.

Ridiculous.

You can't have fiscal conservatism without social conservatism.

Exactly how "socially conservative" do we get until we are conservative enough? If I don't support a Puritanical government that would make Oliver Cromwell happy, I can't want a fiscally responsible, laissez-faire government? That seems incredulous to me.

NEWSFLASH: People have free will. Law should be used to protect against predators (e.g. sexual predators engaging in non consensual sex). If someone chooses to destroy themselves (e.g. through a homosexual lifestyle), it's sad, but the government can't be their savior and neither can you. Stop wasting my money trying to save these people. Of course you may not believe in free will, in which case, God has preordained these people to be sinners. Stop spending my money trying to change what God has preordained.

As soon as you claim the government has the authority to enforce all the minutiae of *your* values, the government can use the authority you have conceded to it to enforce *other* values, no matter how depraved. They can, for instance, claim the authority to teach homosexual history lessons to kindergarteners. They do not have the authority to do this, as it is a crime against the children. I want to keep the government out of it altogether. You sound like you want the state to have the same power as the lefties: limit the free actions of others when those actions do nothing to harm anyone else, using the tyranny of the government. You're two sides of the same big government coin, and that big government, with all its good intentions, costs big bucks and gets poor results.

BTW, I'm a conservative Eastern Orthodox Christian. Should I support a ban on the sale and consumption of all meat and dairy products every Wednesday and Friday, 40 days before Easter, 40 days before Christmas, etc., because that is my religious tradition and I find it scandalous that Protestant and Catholic lushes eat meat and cheese on fasting days? According to pure social conservatism, I should want to have the government enforce these rules, make you pay for their enforcement and take away your civil rights (so police can get into your homes to make sure your dinners are GTG), because my church thinks it might help you save your soul. I will not think that way because it concedes the government has the authority to teach my children what *it* thinks is best and to force me to follow what *it* believes is proper morality.

You think you know what you want. Read the history of the Byzantine Empire and what can happen when church and state are a double-headed eagle. Hint: animals don't generally have two heads for a reason.

To change the values of others, you have to do so by the power of argument and persuasion, not the force of government.

Wow. I abused the use of the word “incredulous.” I should have said “meritless.”
