Knowing several of the reporters who have gone to work for the Tribune, I think your concerns are overblown. They've found a new model for media (i.e., they're a non-profit, not a charity), and they're not taking government funds. At some point, if other media outlets, specifically newspapers are going to survive, they're going to have to adopt this model, because the Dallas Morning News certainly isn't going to survive with a $37 paywall.
