Now wait a minute... I thought the NY Law just passed had a religious conscience exemption?
Unless... the law is interpreted differently or means something different, she should not be compelled to marry the gay couple and that couple should find a clerk with no such religious convictions.

No. That exception only applies to employees of religious organizations as defined by the State of New York. In this instance, Ms Centi, is an elected official. It does not apply to her.

The law does not exempt public officials from carrying out their duties because of their religious convictions. Nor should it. The law is the law, and right now (for the moment, at least), the law in New York allows for 'marriages' between same-sex couples. Public officials are hired/elected to carry out the law, not to refuse to do so based on their religious convictions. If the law conflicts with their religious convictions (or any other strongly held personal convictions), the correct thing to do is resign, as this woman did.
