One with a definite interest in the race is Nick Lampson, a Beaumont Democrat who represented Texas' 9th Congressional District from 1997 to 2005 before falling victim to the controversial mid-decade redistricting effort engineered by then-House Majority Leader Tom Delay.
Lampson lost in 2004 to U.S. Rep. Ted Poe, R-Humble, regained a seat in 2006 when he defeated DeLay and lost again in 2008 to U.S. Rep. Pete Olson, R-Sugar Land.
"I certainly have an interest in taking a look at being back in Congress," Lampson said. "I don't want to go back and get caught up in all the divisiveness that's going on now, but I would really look at an opportunity to explore serving Texas."
University of Houston political scientist Richard Murray, a redistricting expert, noted that the newly drawn 14th district is very similar to the district Lampson represented before DeLay took it apart. "A strong Democrat deeply rooted in Jefferson County would have a chance," he said.
On the Republican side, state Rep. Larry Taylor, R-Friendswood, immediately expressed interest.
"Congressman Paul's announcement today not to seek re-election has created a rare opportunity for public service at the national level," Taylor said in a statement Tuesday. "I have received encouragement from conservative leaders across Texas this afternoon. It is an opportunity that I will consider very seriously in the coming weeks."
Jaworski, Medina? Other possible candidates include Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski on the Democratic side and 2010 gubernatorial candidate Debra Medina on the Republican side. Neither returned requests for comment, although Medina told the Texas Tribune it was doubtful she would run to replace the man who was something of a mentor to her, in part because she no longer lives in the redrawn district.

I hear congressional redistricting has already been done in Wyoming, Vermont and a couple other states.
Medina’s a little moonbatish, but she’s got her good points. I think she’d probably be a good contender for Paul’s seat.
The first names are starting to appear. Nick Lampson returning to Congress wouldn’t be a good thing.
If he does for a brief period of time, we’ll dispatch him soon enough as usual. :)
Good catch. Impy was making the point that there would be a lot of interest for this seat.
Lampson did not defeat DeLay in 2006 he beat a write-in candidate, Shelly Sekula Gibbs
Lampson has no chance. Neither does a RINO in that district.
Your (annual) post is correct ;)
IIRC, she ain’t just a “little.” She’s a 9/11 Truther.
Lampson is not going to win a general election in a Brazoria County-based CD in 2012. Not gonna happen.
Lampson wouldn’t have won DeLay’s seat at all had Sekula-Gibbs not been forced by a liberal judge, in all defiance of common sense and fairness, to be a write-in candidate as opposed to having her name printed on the ballot (as it was for the remainder of DeLay’s term, which she won).
Of course. Or had it not been 2006.
While under TX law it was too late to replace a candidate on the ballot (the deadline was several months prior to the election, much earlier than the NJ deadline that the NJ Supreme Court ignored so as to replace the Torch with Lautencorpse), there was an exception in the case of the candidate dying or becoming ineligible to run. Tom DeLay changed his domicile to VA so as to become ineligible to run (I guess that DeLay could not get nominated to a judgeship in the Bronx like Lazio did last year : ), which should have allowed the GOP to replace him with SSG on the ballot, but the liberal judge decided that voters did not really deserve a choice and refused to allow a Republican to be listed on the ballot.
Lil’ Deb admiting to being a Truther in her last debate. Only thing she’ll run for now is the County Line.
What an arrogant jerk. He's already been tossed from two districts, he wants to try for a third?
A reasonable person would take a hint and happily live in the private sector but not, this is a Democrat, so he craves power.
Hopefully Ron Paul will work to keep the seat in the R column.
