South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham conceded Wednesday that he and his fellow Republicans are now eating their own words as they try to convince the country they are working to stave off a federal default.
Our problem is we made a big deal about this for three months. How many Republicans have been on TV saying, Im not going to raise the debt limit. You know, Mitch [McConnell] says, Im not going to raise the debt limit unless we talk about Medicare. And Ive said Im not going to raise the debt limit until we do something about spending and entitlements. So weve got nobody to blame but ourselves, Graham told reporters after a GOP caucus lunch.
We shouldnt have said that if we didnt mean it.
Grahams comments were in response to a question about comments McConnell, the Senate minority leader, made during a radio interview Wednesday in which he defended his plan that would have Congress cede power to President Barack Obama to hike the nations $14.3 trillion debt ceiling without approving spending cuts first . McConnell told radio host Laura Ingraham that a default could hand President Obama and other Democrats an opportunity to blame Republicans for a bad economy and destroys the GOPs brand.
Graham disputed that contention. Most people who got elected in 2010 didnt come up here worried about the brand, they came up here worried about the country, he said. You go explain to them why theyre wrong [when they] say that the countrys on an unsustainable path. I dont think they are wrong.
The South Carolina Republican said he hopes House Republicans can pass legislation that raises the debt limit while also structurally changing the way the government spends money. One proposal calls for deep spending cuts, statutory spending caps, and a constitutional amendment to balance the budget.
If they cant, then Mitchs idea makes sense, Graham said. But if they can pass something out of the House that raises the debt limit that changes the reason we got in debt, that would be a fundamental new direction for the country, I think we should support that.
Senator Lindsey, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!
Being that the only "we" Graham belongs to is liberaldom, I'm in full agreement with that statement.
Graham and McConnell sound like they took some bad acid and are freaking out. What is this ‘nobody to blame but ourselves’ horses#!+? Would they please STFU and stop undercutting Boehner and Cantor?
I’m surprised Boeing picked SC to put a new plant in (not move one as the lying libs tell it) with a liberal like Graham as their Senator.
He makes the Washington state libs look like moderates.
I think we need to fund a GOP challenger for Miss Graham next time he runs for re-election.
My read is that he actually agreed with, and was defending, the new conservative R’s that the tea party helped put there, especially when he said they don’t care about the Party brand, they care about the country, and he doesn’t think they’re wrong.
Brilliant!!! Lindsey to a T.
Graham agrees with the fiscally conservative new republicans.
Right.
No, the real problem is that Lindsey and other republicans like him bear a great deal of the responsibility and blame for the country being in the economic toilet.
They spent like a boatload of drunken Obamas when they had the majority power. And when they fell into the minority they supported much of the outrageous democrat spending.
If they had governed as conservatives we would not be in these financial straits and Obama would never have been elected President.
It'll be a long wait, sadly. He's not up for reelection until 2014. I would guess that, round about 2013, he'll start pretending to be conservative again so he can once more fool the good people of South Carolina.
Wonder at what point in Lindsey Graham life he thought someone cared about what he said?.He’s like Obama his words are useless.
Federal default is a straw man, like global warming and the Y2K bug.
The SC Tea Party needs to take out the trash.
You can always tell when Lindsey has gotten another “night letter” from the DNC....
