McConnell’s plan confuses the chattering class
Washington Post ^ | 7/12/2011 | Jennifer Rubin

The concept isn’t that hard to understand. 1. McConnell had enough of the phony White House talks. The White House offered a paltry $2 billion in actual, immediate cuts. 2. McConnell gave a speech to make clear that wasn’t enough and that the debt limit would be raised only with real cuts and without tax hikes. 3. McConnell could sit back and wait for default. 4. But he comes up with a mechanism to force Obama to put up cuts, send them to Congress and face “default” if the president’s cuts don't get through. 5. In the process he makes 34 Democratic senators vote over and over again on cuts. (The sound you hear in the background is the conga line at the Senate Republican Committee headquarters.)

The wailing and gnashing of teeth yesterday on FR was a sight to behold. You'd have thought McConnell had sold military secrets to the Chinese he was being so roundly criticized. But his plan is actually quite clever.

I, like most conservatives, would prefer a clean, budget-cutting plan with no taxes and no ceiling hike. But, the GOP only controls the House -- they cannot do it alone.

McConnell's plan to put the burden on the Boy King has a certain attraction to it.

I am not so sure...I do hope you are right, and would appreciate your response.

But here is a counterpoint. I just got an email from DeMint’s organization, the Senate Conservative Fund. He says that he and those his org helped elect (ie, Paul, Rubio, Lee, Jonson, etc.) are absolutely in lock step agreement that this should be opposed.

This is very problematic, and McConnell may have really screwed this up.

If Obama senses that conservative opposition is as great as we hope it is, then...why wouldn’t he accept this, and then watch it go down in flames b/c of conservatives? If he does that, doesn’t he look like the Great Pragmatist, willing to work with McConnell, but the Evil Conservatives are the ones who killed this?

That particular narrative “might” have some appeal to some indy/moderate voters. So McConnell better HOPE that Obama kills his reaching out here, b/c if he makes conservatives kill it, Obama is going to be re-elected, a third party is going to rise up (more or less...maybe not formally), and McConnell himself will be ousted at next opportunity.

Tell me how this is wrong....(please...)

Yeah, no lack of silliness in FR for sure. I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry.

One other thought....why couldn’t Obama just say, “Ok, no more Defense Department”. That’d get us close to the numbers, I’d think. And of course he would love to do that. So, I’m afraid putting the burden on him just gives him an opportunity to put the squeeze back on us......

No it doesn’t. Actually look into the “deal”. It requires a 2/3rds vote to override the President. It gives all the power to the President. It is preemptive surrender by the Senate GOP.

But, the GOP only controls the House -- they cannot do it alone.

I don't quite agree. If the GOP passes a good, clean, scaled back budget, perhaps even a near Xerox copy of the 2000 or 2001 budget and stands firm, what can the far left do? If the GOP passes a debt ceiling increase large enough to cover responsible spending but only that, what can the anti-American liberal fringe do? If we make it clear that, for example, Bill Clinton's last budget was a centrist and moderate approach to spending, and we're patterning our new spending on that level, we can use the talking point that Clinton was a moderate and his budget took care of everything we need to do, which is all we can afford. Why not use the far left's worship of the horn-dog to help America?

Actually when Bubba Klinton gave the chicoms missile and guidance technology in return for campaign contributions, there was not much of an uproar - except at the FR.

The problem with McConnell's plan as I understand it, is that it does not solve the problem. It certainly should give the Republicans a political advantage, but one needs to keep in mind that the sheeple have a very short memory and most don't really understand the problem. In the meantime, it gives der 0berFuhrer Hussein 0bama unprecedented powers and abrogates congress' responsibilities. That's how dictator's arise.

It has no attraction at all. It’s an abdication of Congressional responsibility. The Congress has the sole authority to borrow money. They can’t just pass the buck to the president and the treasury secretary.

The House should decide on how much the United States is going to borrow (if any) for the coming year, vote on it and send it to the senate. Stop the dealmaking and start legislating. “this is what you have to work with, Mr. President. You’re not getting any more. You’re the executive. Deal with it and prioritize.” That should be the attitude. Not “let’s put the onus all on him over there”

I agree that Obama could come up with some totally outrageous bullsh!+ out of McConnel's plan. But I think that's largely the point.

To make Obummer and the leftist scum go on record, and then they'll all have to suffer the blowback for his outrageousness...and still when he sends it to the house and Senate for approval, it still has to meet the condition of $ cuts for $ increases.

Well I was PO’d too.

But then I woke up this morning and looked at it like this:

Even if they did get some sort of “deal”, it would only be an incremental amount that would lead to the same negotiation in a year and 0bama would use the Press to destroy his opposition all over again ultimately issuing another Nuclear Option of shutting off Gamma's SS checks.

So instead, we grant him his wish to continue to pile up debt (which is already beyond repair with 0bama is the WH) AND hold firm on the no new taxes.

Then the GOP runs this HARD against 0bama in his re-election.

They gave 0bama HIS plan, the debt of America is his legacy and the GOP can run that on saying we refused to allow an increase in taxes when the economy was at its worst.

All of this comes from 0bama’s god-like arrogant personality, inability to come to a cooperative deal, and Nuclear threat of shutting down SS checks because he was opposed to reducing the enormous amount of Spending.

I guess I am warming up to this for because Its a way to bring this to a head where it doesn't become some incremental tool the Dems use any longer and we have an election on the matter of what will our children's future look like?

Will it be a default threatened nightmare of entitlement while punishing those who are successful, or will we get back to the roots of what America was all about to begin with.

Given that 0bama WILL get what he want when he threatens Entitlement Armageddon, then the never ending creeping elements to his expansion of Government are truly endless.

If the GOP goes ALL IN and labels this man and his Party to WIN, then this might have been worth it.

It paints the options of 0bama’a America VS. the GOP’s vision in Black and White.

Its somewhat telling that the Post is bending over backwards in several articles to portray McConnell as tough and this as a good alternative for conservatives.

McConnell seems to be saying Barky & Company will feel guilty about continuing raising taxes and continuing to spend.

The Donks will take that bet every day of the week and laugh.

Group,

The GOP is only in charge of the House. They are not in charge of the entire government. They can not dictate anymore than the Dems can. With that said, McConnels plans will expose the Dems while also letting the House members adhere to their principles. Other plans that are out there would do the same thing.

Sure, it’s politics and bad math which we all hate but, it’s not likely we’ll get a much better deal until we get the white house. I know it’s hard to to swallow, but if we don’t look like we’re willing to compromise, we’ll get slammed in the next election and then the socialist will be back in complete control. Bottom line: Sometimes it’s best to be wise, rather than correct. Time and fiscal reality on our side. Patience. DONT OVER-REACH!! I learned this lesson in a Kung-Fu episode. I loved that show.

There are two schools of thought on how to deal with The Bamster and his minions.

McConnell is basically saying that we cannot trust this guy to deal honestly and thus, the only way to change things is to put off Fiscal Armageddon until grown-ups can capture the Congress and WH in 2012 to fix things. To that end, his strategy is to rope-a-dope The Bamster until we can kick him out of office.

The other school of thought (TEA party et al.) is to fight the final battle now -- draw a line in the sand and dare The Bamster to defy the public. They are counting on voter outrage to overwhelm the whining about cuts to entitlements.

Not clear which path is the best strategy -- both have advantages and disadvantages. My head is with McConnell but my heart is with the House TEA partiers.

And you have made the mistake of thinking there is some perfect plan which will placate the MSM and the Tea Party. You CANNOT circle that square, the MSM will dislike any plan the Republicans come up with. See we fall into the trap that we can play chess better than the Democrats, that we can checkmate them. That is the mistake and the sometimes silliness here on FR, there is no plan that will nuke the media and the Dems, none. See we play chess with them, we take their queen and a rook and guess what they change the board pieces and add back two queens and three rooks. So McConnell needs to do what is right, DESPITE what the MSM howls about. The whole game of political maneuvering is what Democrats want us to do, engage them in that circle jerk, they laugh at all our closed door meetings with the Mulatto Marxist. The fact that we are there is a joke to them, like Charles Huntziger negotiating with Hitler on that train car in Compiègne in 1940 for an armistice. Reagan used to lay out his priciples and then have the Democrats come to him and negoiate their terms, it’s what works and gets you electoral landslides, not trying desperately to not to anger old Jewish ladies in Boca Raton or black college students in Atalanta. They hate you anyways, so ignore them, we can drag their brains dead carcasses along when we crush them at the ballot box.

Just say no to debt ceiling increase. Those are all other, unconnected issues. To hold the dcebt ceiling hostage to what will be chimerical, future budget cuts just shows me how the GOP snatches defeat from the jaws of victory.
