Dragon con is about 6 conventions that all happen in the same place at the same time. It’s HUGE, no bigger than that. Which ever sub group you’re in, gaming, SF, fantasy, horror, movies or books, there’s plenty for you to do. Of course the real freak community subsection of fen (like say the furies) also tend to be very well “represented”. Before the recent rise of San Diego ComicCon Dragon was the big fish in the ocean, it’s lost a bit of luster but it’s still freaking huge. I’d probably train the kids up with some smaller local action, nobody that hasn’t spent time in the fen community is emotionally prepared for 40,000 freaks spread over 5 hotels, not the 13 year old and probably not even you.
I’m sure the Atlanta convention is fine. I’m just relating what I saw in Texas 30 years ago, and the comments from Canadian police on pedophile trekkies. That matched up with what I saw from a limited perspective.
I would be less worried about teenage girls being involved than teenage boys who never date and live in a fantasy world.

I plan on getting prepared. I am up to a three second view time on this image before tossing my peas.
That should have it covered on the Horror front.
Will work on this for fantasy ;)
Fair and Balanced, y'know ;)
There are nuts in every group. Trekkies are no more likely to be pedophiles than baseball fans.
It’s not the ugly, it’s the crazy. You get a large quantity of people that are slightly abnormal and put them in a situation where they have no reason to “blend” with normal. Lots of people running around in costume, even the non-costumed ones will be having these oddball conversations. You’ll be out of the normal world where the important things of the world are inflation and the war on terror and into the fen world where important things are Kirk vs Pickard and whether “the trilogy” is Star Wars or LOTR. It’s an alternate reality, kind of like a college football game only it lasts longer and has less structure.
David Berkowitz was adopted so I don’t know if that counts.
That sounds attractive! Anything to get away from the real world, at the moment.
I can see what you mean, and certainly the Hassidic community often looks cranky or retrograde. But their way of life must have some benefits, or it would not have lasted so long.
One thing in their favor, is that they rarely kill or harm their children. Child abuse does occur (like everywhere) but it is rare. Most Hassidic children are safe at home with their families. In the welfare suburbs of our advanced economies, child neglect is rampant, the deaths of children at the hands of their caregivers is so common it is banal, and the rest of society is ok with that. The perpetrators usually have a lenient sentence.
