Alright! Just the guy I want to talk to.

Want to go with a rifle that can reach out and touch bad guys. For me, 7.62 (or thereabouts) is the way I want to go. Would like a less expensive (not cheap) weapon with scope, mass produced round, and accurate.

Recommendations?

Questions:

Budget?

What have you shot that “feels” right to you?

Are you urban, suburban or rural? And where do you plan on “bugging out” to?

Now select the round:
7.62x39
7.62x51
7.62x54
30-06

The x39 will limit range but is least expensive. It is also lighter so more can be carried and allows faster follow up shots. The x54 is also not expensive. Neither, being Russian have the quality control of the USA/NATO ammo and are generally not as accurate. But then you are only looking at minute of zombie. The mil-surp 3-06 is all but gone making it expensive and the x51 will do everything the 30-06 will do except handle the very heavy bullet weights used for large game.

Next, action. Past the x39 you are going up in price for semi-auto. Will a bolt or level do? What are you used to? I'm a semi guy and assume that is what people want most of the time.

I was all hot for a Ruger Mini-14 but because I live in Massachusetts it is difficult to find one that isn't too expensive and doesn't have banned features like folding stock and flash suppressor.

So I changed tactics and just picked up a sweet deal this week.

I have a favorite shop in Rhode Island which is run buy an ex-CT State Trooper. He has consignment pieces. I started looking at 30-06 or 30-30 lever action rifles like the Marlin 94 or Winchester. Expensive, yes...but....I found a Mossberg 479 30-30 lever action he had for 250 bucks! Near mint condition.
A sweet piece indeed. I've read good things about this model and I love Mossberg products. It came with no rear sight but has a Picatinny rail in its place. I mounted a scope to it and can't wait to get to the range to fine tune the zero on the scope.

Long range (ish) and a decently potent calibre. I've completed my arsenal.
Full size and sub-compact 9mm pistols, Mossberg 12Ga 500A tactical shotgun, low and high calibre rifles...one semi-auto.

Now it's off to the shows to stock up on ammo.
