No doubt the etcher had no idea what "posterity" means and had never seen or heard it before so he just perceived the word as the familiar "prosperity." Human beings tend to do things like that, but still, it is inexcusable under the circumstances.

You don’t know the circumstances behind how this happened. Who and how the pieced was etched. Could have been an independent artist, or it could have been via contract with a large studio where the person etching couldn’t understand English.

Being an artist myself, I did as the client directs. If they gave me misspellings or an incorrect quote, I always asked for verification: “Is this correct?”
