Texas Execution Broke International Law, Says U.N. Official
Atlantic Wire ^ | July 8, 2011 | Adam Martin

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay accused the United States of breaking international law when Texas executed Mexican citizen Humberto Leal Garcia Jr. Thursday night. The execution sparked controversy after the International Court of Justice in the Hague determined in 2004 that the U.S. had violated the Vienna Convention when officials failed to tell foreign inmates about their right to visit their consular officials. But the U.S. Supreme Court voted yesterday that Texas could go ahead with the execution, even over the objection of President Barack Obama. Pillay said today the execution "raises particular legal concerns" about the fairness of the proceedings against Leal.

Pillay said Perry and the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles each failed to exercise consular and fair-trial obligations — spelled out under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and an International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights — that could have prevented the U.S. from breaching its obligations under international law.

Pillay cited the 2004 international court ruling "saying the U.S. must review and reconsider the cases of 51 Mexican nationals sentenced to death, including Leal's--But, she said, that never happened." Leal had been found guilty and sentenced to death for the 1994 rape and murder of a teenager.

It was a close 5-4 vote. I wonder what would have been the Texas response had it gone the other way? We are living in dangerous times.

I'm not so certain it's going to get better any time soon. Rather this is going to continue much longer than they're projecting I fear.

I sure hope that an advisement of rights regarding consular officials of Kenya is given to Obama when he’s arrested.

Well, I guess they’d better issue an arrest warrant for obama as he is the CEO of the U.S. I wouldn’t even think about cleaning my rifle in preperation of defending the scumbag from the UN.

Then the UN should invade Texas! The fight for the freedom of humanity should begin there. Destroy the UN, then march to Washington.

I'm a not so healthy 70 yr. old but I'd gladly fight the SOB UN if it come to that.

Except for the four communists anti-American fools on the Court.

I would like to point out a few things:

1) This guy made a death bed confession and expressed his regret,

2) The UN purposefully attacks the US when it well known that under the US federal system the states have a certain amount of sovereignty and no treaty can change this,

3) It is the duty of the current administration to defend the sovereignty of our states, not undermine and belittle them in both the domestic and international press.

Had it gone the other way, maybe he would have gotten the stick himself in prison or on the street. One can only hope.

A little reminder to the whores and scumbags of the UN that the US has not relinquished sovereignty to a chickenshit band of neonazis who call themselves the "International Criminal Court."

“ignoring the fact that the guy was an illegal alien who committed a despicable murder and rape.”

Not an illegal. If he has been in US since the age of 2, he was granted amnesty in 1986. Citizen from then on.

If we ever get an American for a president again, we should hope he/she will at least raise the question of the UN moving out on its own to somewhere else. Just raising the question from the Oval Office would have consequences of superb entertainment value to watch.

I seriously doubt that we get an American for President again this side of eternity, my Friend. The biggest opposition to this are:1. The Democrat Party. 2.The Republican Party. 3. The mainstream media, and last but not least,4. The voters.

It worked in El Salvador. The "sparrows" helped defeat the criminal leftwing terrorists and bring democratic government to that lovely land. Quite plausible to believe a similar people's movement could help tame this plague of alien a**holes.
