It's like one of those human-interest stories they'd put at the end of the evening news sometimes back when Walter Cronkite was on.

In newsroom jargon that story was called 'the kicker'.

Yeah. I have Dan Rather's copy of The CBSNews Manual of Practice and Style right here. It defines "kicker" or "kick piece" as follows:

Kicker: a light piece, usually with a humor angle, used to fill out the final seconds of a program if we've covered everything that's come off the DNC fax line and the big advocacy groups have taken the day off.
