Bill Buckley memorably spoke of Betty Ford and her rambling and relentless trendiness. Noting that it would not at all be surprising if any normal young man would be eager to accept what her "nubile" daughter Susan had to give, Bill wondered aloud what qualifications Betty might seek in a lover for 18 year old Susan: that he be rich? (no certainly that would not be a politically sustainable restriction), that he be handsome or athletic? (surely Susan herself would be a better judge of such qualities in her potential lover) that he be a moderate Republican? preposterous! Bill concluded reluctantly that Mrs. Ford who had attained her high place in American life by a "concatenation" of events romantic (with Mr. Ford) and felonious (Nixon's felonies) had not thought the matter through and was probably incapable of thinking the matter through or she would not have raised the subject in the first place.
Now, granted that Bill was having a great deal of fun at her expense when she was alive and able to answer him back (but wise enough not to try), she was nonetheless a member of our fallen human race as are we all. She was a sinner as are we all. She needed the salvation earned for her by her Savior as do we all. May she have repented and have accepted that salvation! May we all! And may God have mercy on her immortal soul (and on the souls of each of us when our respective times come)!
We need not be nasty to her or to one another over her demise.
