Former first lady Betty Ford dies at 93

Betty Ford said things that first ladies just don't say, even today. And 1970s America loved her for it.

According to Mrs. Ford, her young adult children probably had smoked marijuana - and if she were their age, she'd try it, too. She told "60 Minutes" she wouldn't be surprised to learn that her youngest, 18-year-old Susan, was in a sexual relationship (an embarrassed Susan issued a denial).

Can you believe it? I can see a simple "I didn't like her" sufficing in many forums. But this?

If Betty Ford stood for what I have read this evening, she was a POS.

I met the lady [and she WAS a lady], but cannot say I knew her. I did know her daughter, Susan, though. We partied many times at Circus Maximus in DC.

Susan told me [at the time her father pardoned Richard Nixon] that it was Betty who convinced him to do it. He had been House Minority Leader and knew full well the political ramifications of a pardon [which came true in the election of 1976]. But, Betty said that it would be worse if Nixon had been indicted - the country would have been split apart. She was right.

So, what if she had an opposite opinion of you on abortion? At least she was unafraid to stand up for her convictions [although I do not agrre on her abortion stance] ...

You misunderstand. No one is holding her up as an example. She held views I do not agree with but she also did good things. That makes her human. And I thought conservatives allowed others to hold opposing views. Apparently some believe that we do as long as we can curse them for it.

I'm going to bed. Goodnight.

I hardly think my comments warranted getting them removed but so be it. You still have the drunken cow remark left on the forum and hinkley’s remark as well.

Speaking the truth here now gets a freeper’s comments removed?

I didn't hit "Abuse". I haven't done so on any of the comments.

Goodnight.

Opposing views on abortion? No there is absolutely no leniency for that. None

This double standard is almost hypocritical. Kennedy's threads were worse than this but no one 'scolded' any poster for stating what they thought of him. Are we to overlook Ford's pro-abortion stance? Why? Because she opened a clinic for drunk celebrities? Or that she was a RINO Republican?

Truly I'm very surprised.

Credit where credit is due. One of Mrs. Ford’s better moments was when she and Mr. Ford adopted their eldest child. She gave birth to the subsequent children.

Well if I get zotted for being against abortion and against those that are for it, no matter who it is, it will not hurt my feelings one bit.

Sickening is this thread.

Who are you to sit in judgement of her life, now that she's dead, when you said nothing when she was alive? You assuage your own guilt saying you were "too busy" to care in your teenage years. But what about after?

Her time has come to face God. He will judge her. He doesn't need your sanctimonious harping but you can be sure He'll remember YOUR celebration and YOUR hatred for the dead and judge YOU accordingly.

Just a question: the Roe v. Wade decision was handed down by U.S. Supreme Court in January, 1973. Gerald Ford did not become president until August 9, 1974. Mrs. Ford wasn’t even Second Lady, let alone First Lady yet when the SCOTUS invalidated all 50 states’ abortion laws. I remember reading that she supported it and said something along the lines of “it was a great decision”(which I completely disagree with her about, of course) but I never read that she actually had anything to do with the actual assisting of the Roe v. Wade case. Do you have any information on this?

I don’t hate anyone and stating the truth is not hate speech...unless of course you’re a left wing maniac.

I didn’t know she was a pro-abort/pro-death woman until this very evening.

Sickening is the image of this woman being painted, ‘by conservatives’.

As far as judging that is up to God but He did give us the intellect to distinguish good from bad.
