Betty Ford said things that first ladies just don't say, even today. And 1970s America loved her for it.
According to Mrs. Ford, her young adult children probably had smoked marijuana - and if she were their age, she'd try it, too. She told "60 Minutes" she wouldn't be surprised to learn that her youngest, 18-year-old Susan, was in a sexual relationship (an embarrassed Susan issued a denial).

Shame on you for soiling this website with your hatred
God Bless her service to her fellow man and her own service to fellow alcoholics and drug addicts.
Here! Here! Thank you.
Are you aware that Betty Ford was the proud recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Abortion Rights Action League?
I'm not even sure that Nancy Pelosi has been given that "honor".
Very much agree! Most of the people on this site have the common sense good manners to know that when someone dies you just DON’T make crude comments. You keep them to yourself. Thank goodness the majority of us learned this at an early age.
May she rest in peace and my thoughts go out to her family & friends.
Most excellent post! I’m sure I am not the only person thinking that you are speaking for me. Thanks!
What an honor. With that particular anecdote, you sound like a very interesting character, which piques my interest.
For a number of years, there was a particularly interesting character in one of our social clubs, who had the best stories, but it took me some time to actually figure out who he was. Turns out he was a senior aid to General Westmoreland, but he had so many stories about presidential encounters, a shouting match and pushing match he witnessed with McNamara, Kissinger being drunk on several occasions. The stories were endless and very entertaining once you got within his circle (I was never in his inner circle, but was lucky enough to sit in a few dinner conversations).
He died several years ago, but anyone with stories of dancing with a first lady, has got to be a book worth reading.
I didn’t like the comment about “drunken classless cow” that another critic made about Betty Ford.
But I totally agree with you that Betty’s pro-abortion views should not be overlooked. More than any other prominent Republican figure, Betty gave legitimacy to the recently handed-down Roe v. Wade decision. She gave Republican legitimacy to legalizing marijuana and premarital sex, which she said would reduce the divorce rate.
This liberal First Lady fostered the feminist, promiscuous baby-killing death of our once-great culture.
Eloquently put.
There is a real deterioration here..guess after some have felt so powerful behind the computer they confuse in your face disgusting behavior with “strong conservatism”.
How is that analogous to this?
Very well put!!
Those comments trashing a former first lady belong on the Lib sites.
Betty Ford’s public personna was the complete opposite of Pat Nixon (called “Plastic Pat” back in the day).
Her outspoken nature was shocking to many (parents & grandparents). I was 20 and found it quite refreshing.
May she rest in peace.
Spot on and Precisely what I was pointing out last nite.
Since my comments were unceremoniously yanked last nite from this and another Ford thread, you can't see my remarks but I guarantee they were in no way even comparable to that remark.
I wasn't even aware of the woman's stance until the first Ford thread. I had even made a complimentary remark (also pulled) before knowing her position. And then finding out more and more and watching FReepers holding this woman up as some kind of virtuous person was stunning.
Thanks.
She was “virtuous” only in the liberal sense. As you say, it is stunning that so many Freepers hold her up as an icon. She was Teddy Kennedy in Republican clothes. Freepers, I dare say, did not make complimentary posts when ol’ Teddy died.
For shame, ar. This is why the original 668 left FR. Speaking ill of the dead is a no-no. Puts the ass in assembly and cheapens the FR brand.
OldLady: Good on ya! The world would be a better place if we all got up thinking, “in God’s name I will try to be decent.” It’s little enough to shoot for and would make a huge improvement in anyone’s life.
And the reason Outlaw Womans post was pulled was because she called her a pos. Twice. Among other things.
This is a former Republican First Lady. She was a liberal and we disagreed with her. But she has now passed on. Spewing insults will not change her opinions. But it will make FReepers look crass.
“I believe FR has been changing along with society in general.”
Bad posters drive out good.
Yes. They do. I’m thinking of taking a break.
The thread was restored fully sometime last nite which I’m appreciative of. Let people read the comments and make up their own minds.
