One of the nation's major grocery store chains is eliminating self-checkout lanes in an effort to encourage more human contact with its customers.
Albertsons LLC, which operates 217 stores in seven Western and Southern states, will eliminate all self-checkout lanes in the 100 stores that have them and will replace them with standard or express lanes, according to published reports.

I LOVE THE SELF CHECKOUT LANES !!!!!!!
there are times I don’t WANT to ‘interact”...HA! and its sooo fast. the only problem is the register shouts out what goes through..ha
“Put your bannanas in the bag!”
“Put your wine in the bag!”
“Put your whipped cream in the bag!”
“Put your prophylactics in the bag!”
Ha.
This should help unemployment...a little. Good idea. A little more human contact is good. Unless it’s from some drippy 17 year old with no human contact skills.
Since when does a grocery store care about human contact?
Did they care when the scanners were installed? No.
They’re getting ripped off, at least in some stores, so they’re taking them all out so they’re not accused of discrimination.
That, I suspect, is the real reason. Personally, I don’t go buy groceries for human interaction. I pick whatever line is the shortest so I can get on with my day.
YEA!! I’ve been refusing to use them since they put ‘em in. Every time they try to drag me over to self-check, I tell ‘em I’m refusing as a matter of principle. I also refuse to shop at Fresh and Easy because they don’t have checkout.
You love them? I avoid them like the plague. It’s like having to bus your dishes at a restaurant — like doing their work for them. Plus, the checkers are always over there helping people, because they don’t work really well. Or folks cannot figure out the commands, etc. There are too many variables — works great for straight-forward items, not so great for little things, odd shapes, etc. I do not like them at all.
How much do you want to bet that the unions had something to do with this??
Safeway/Ralph’s has been doing it for a year now, yet people avoid it.
Why? Everytime you place the grocs in the bag, the stupid machine tells you to remove it and the comedy cycle begins. That’s why there are “technicians” close-by whose sole purpose is to rescue the poor saps who use those e-cashiers.
I always use the self checkout. Lets me pack my bags the way I want.
Besides, who needs to interact with a checkout person when we have FR?
Yeah, i think Albertson’s is unionized.
LOL!
What human contact? I don’t exchange family histories with the checkout person, just grunts and groans while lifting items onto the conveyer belt and hopefully a thank you at the end of the transaction.
Boy, I sure hope my local adult film rental place doesn’t install one of those things. :-)
(j/k!)
I say that’s it’s boring for the girl or guy running the master console. ...just standing there...pushing buttons...
One time I selected Spanish for the language to blurt out my purchases. That way nobody would know what I was buying.
However, I live in Los Angeles, and as I looked around I quickly realized that 95% of the people in the store knew precisely what the machine was saying.
I don’t use ‘em at all. I have told the store employees that paying the same price for stuff when I am doing their jobs is not right. I would use self-checkout if I got a 5-10% discount, but not if I have to pay full ride.
