.Award-winning gains by Atlanta students were based on widespread cheating by 178 named teachers and principals, said Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal on Tuesday. His office released a report from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation that names 178 teachers and principals 82 of whom confessed in what's likely the biggest cheating scandal in US history.
This appears to be the largest of dozens of major cheating scandals, unearthed across the country. The allegations point an ongoing problem for US education, which has developed an ever-increasing dependence on standardized tests.

And let’s give them lots of money to make sure they have the tools to get the job done. Yep, great idea.
When I took the SATs back around 1966, you were not allowed to have any of your own teachers as monitors. Likewise, the NYS regents exams (standardized final examinations in subjects like History, Algebra I, Chemistry, ...) were administered by teachers other than those who taught you and graded by teachers from other schools. The teachers administering the test did not answer questions or offer any help whatsoever.
If the same people teach and are in anyway involved in the evaluation, there is an obvious conflict of interest.
“NOTHING will happen to these people.
WE will hear about healing and moving on and mistakes were made
... and no one will go to jail, or lose their job.
... reassigned and resigned will be the worst outcome.
These folks ARE elite members of Atlantas protected class.”
Oh, how wrong you are!
You see, they will be suspended! Suspended with pay, and benefits, and pension! Can you imagine how that must hurt? Do you even understand the humility you must have, to have to sit home and collect your paycheck bi-weekly, and NOT TEACH!
I think you make light of the severe disciplinary action that these folks will incur.
There is probably no greater punishment for a NEA member, than being forced to stay away from their love of teaching and their calling in life to educate our youth.
I can’t imagine the anguish these folks are going to feel when they are forced to spend their time at the riverboats and casinos with their small pittance of compensation while they are indefinitely suspended.
Some will probably even be forced to move on to other democrat strongholds, and seek administrative jobs for metropolitan school districts outside of where they are now. They would be forced to relocate, and the forced to be administrators at the silly pay rate of say $250k a year (while still collecting the pay from their previous position of which they are suspended from), and then doubling up on their pensions. Oh, the humanity. If this is not all punishment enough, then I am not sure what is. I mean, this would be considered cruel and unusual by the UN council of human rights, but no.... here in Amerikkka, we humiliate these poor teachers by forcing them into suspensions with pay. Sometimes until retirement!!! This cannot stand!
/sarcasm of course
The teachers had parties where they altered the students test papers before submittal. Some tests were altered such that completely failing the reading section was altered to high scores in reading.
It was admitted that teachers were threatened if they reported this and those who did were lauded (one specifically by Obama).
The scandal is huge here in Hotlanta (as Rush called it rightly).
Response: I heard on Fox this A.M. that the same scandal is being uncovered in Philadelphia, Baltimore, etc. etc.
Comment: I love to watch the "explanations:" i.e. lack of funding, the parents, truancy, the test itself fails to reflect the culture, the Bush administartion, the position of the stars and planets. Anything is blamed as the cause except a reality which must remain unexpressed.
It’s happening all over. Who’s watching the watchers?
If they want to pursue standards they will apparently have to have an independent company do the testing. The teachers have a big vested interest in cheating. They are trying to save their own jobs.
An independent company has no interest in hashing up the results. I suppose they may be vulnerable to bribes, but, bribery is a big crime and I think they’d fear getting “caught on tape.”
“This is not because blacks cant learn, and certainly not because blacks cant teach”
No, it’s because the dominant black culture ridicules education.
It is a crying shame, because post-slavery many great black Americans really undertook to educate themselves and their black compatriots, to empower them and lift them out of poverty, etc.
Their legacy has been just about destroyed and that is a big loss.
“In other news, homeschoolers in a 2009 progress report shows that they out-perform public schools by scoring 37 percentage points on standardized achievement tests.”
Presumably without cheating.
If only they had mo money, none of this would have happened.
I heard some liberal blame this on Bush and the No Child Left Behind law. They said that because the standardized test scores are the most important factor in measuring school quality and student achievement, that schools teach to the test and everything revolves around that.
That may be somewhat true, however, does anything justify cheating on the tests, even though we hear complaints about teaching to the test????
Well, if they teach the test, they wouldn’t have time to teach global warming and homersexuality.
...and condoms and self esteem and endangered species and sports.
Yes, higher. Thanks for catching that.
America’s biggest teacher and Principal cheating scandal..?
But the other thread said Mississippi was the fattest state. ?
“I heard some liberal blame this on Bush and the No Child Left Behind law.”
It is Bush’s fault for letting Ted Kennedy write the law.
