Texas Governor Wages Own Battle Along Border
NPR ^ | 5 July 2011 | John Burnett

Note: This is the first of a two-part series.

The federal government claims the southwest border is more secure than it's ever been. There are more agents and barriers, more choppers, drones, sensors and hi-tech cameras than ever before.

Yet, state officials in Texas maintain the illegal flow of people and drugs is worse than ever — proof, they say, the border is out of control. To back up his rhetoric, Texas Gov. Rick Perry has declared his own war on the traffickers.

Border Threat: Real Or Rhetorical?

President Obama came to El Paso, Texas, in May to praise his homeland security directors for the good job they're doing on the southwest border. "Under their leadership, we have strengthened border security beyond what many believed was possible. They wanted more agents at the border. Well, we now have more boots on the ground on the southwest border than at any time in our history," he said.

But not everyone thinks that's true, including Gov. Perry. "This president either does not know or does not care what is going on on the border of Texas," he said on Fox News for a special report about the Texas border. The on-screen graphic read "Under Attack."

"I don't want the people of the state of Texas to have to be the catalyst that finally gets the administration to understand that there is great terror on our southern border," Perry said.

As a Texan, you should know how long he’s been in Texas government. See #19.

With the power to stand up and make proposals, introduce bills, campaign on stopping illegal immigration and to vote down the government freebies. So, yes. A most definite yes. But if you think he can only do things as governor, ignoring his years as a legislator and lt. gov., then why in the last dozen years as governor has he done squat?

My brothers having a fishing camp down at Zapata...they were down there two weeks ago and the local law is going up and down all the lakeside fishermen and warning them not to come back, even tho they are constantly armed. My older retired brother goes down and stays by himself for weeks at the time, but he talked to some BPA’s and game wardens also and they convinced him it’s not safe alone in the house or on the water. He’s not one that’s easily scared by much.

Most people don’t understand that this is an invasion. And it’s not just drug cartels or Mexican nationals. When they go to the convenience store the many look just like the Mexican nationals, but they’re not. They’re speaking Urdu or Pushtan with the owners, not Spanish. Both brothers can speak Spanish.

“In 1984, Perry was elected to the Texas House of Representatives as a Democrat from a district (64) that included his home county of Haskell”

While I agree that Perry is a politician first, your comment that he could do something as a freshman state rep from near Dallas re immigration is simply ridiculous.

He’s made his share of miscues, to be sure, but he has been more confrontational with Obama Admin than any other gov. with the possible exception of Brewer. He also appears to have more state resources near the border for enforcement purposes than NM, AZ, and CA.

Another big test for Gov. Goodhair will occur in ~43 hours when hopefully he will indirectly tell O and the UN to go take a flying f**k and we juice the murdering POS wetback at the Walls Unit in Huntsville.

Mainly because it has excelerated in just the last two years. Prior to that it was safe, except in places like the barrios of Juarez and Nueva Laredo, Matamoros. The little towns between were safe. Border Texans crossed over and shopped all the time. I’ve done it many many times. The Mexican nationals crossing were coming for work and the many returned home after following the harvests or winter set in. They wanted to be home for the Fiesta of the Dead in December. Now nowwhere along the border is safe. And it’s a completely different kind of people crossing. The ones crossing today are literally crimnals and terrorists. And their intent is to infiltrate.

It’s been ongoing since 2005-2006.

DHS didn’t get going till 2002, and after a couple of years it was clear that they weren’t getting the job done. Legislation to build the fence passed in 2006, but we still don’t have it.
I think Operation Linebacker was supposed to be mostly a temporary thing until the fence was built.

It's worth repeating.

He’s been in Texas government since the late 80’s. Geez, you think he just came out of nowhere to become governor?

Hey, it looks good...A few drooling in cups might even buy it!

The political spin here is speeding up the rotation of the planet...So fast, we're going to be flung into space.

Actually, NO, we’re not. We know exactly what’s going on on our border, and so does our Governor. That’s why he’s placed so many active Texas Rangers down there, and buttload of Game Wardens who have authority to go on any properties down there. Did you know that Texas Game Wardens are the most powerful law officers here next to the County Sheriff? Texas Game wardens even have authority on federal lands here, like Big Bend and Black Gap because we never turned over management of federal lands in Texas to the feds.

Two of my nephews, returning veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq are now game wardens sent to the border. We just handed over many of our state parks to locals to get the funds to hire more returning vets for those positions.

If you don’t know Texas, and what our Governor is doing here, why make such statements?

Here rowdy "dude"..

Take this thread and tell all how Perry has secured and protected the borders down there.

Tell how Mr. Perry is no nonsense when it comes to the borders, and how millions of Mexicans wouldn't dare mess with Texas or Perry.

Since your the Texas expert, I'll sit back and read and maybe comment here and there.

Lets here it, go ahead.
