It has been going on for some time, and has had terrible financial consequences for cities. With the advent of shopping malls, there was little reason to visit a city’s downtown to shop; as the commerce died the jobs died with it. Now we’ve evolved even further, to where malls themselves are dying; between online shopping and specialty stores, there is no reason to drive to a mall, deal with crowds of people, only to find out the item you were looking for is not in stock.
