FARGO Police have identified the victim of Monday's fatal fireworks accident as Jesse William Burley, 41.
An eyewitness here says a Fourth of July fireworks accident decapitated the Fargo man Monday night.
Chris Hanson, who lives down the street from the victim, was packing up his car to leave north Fargos Riviera Heights mobile home park when the accident happened as tornado sirens sounded just before 9:30 p.m.
Burley, Hansons neighbor, was getting ready to set off a second round of what Hanson said he believes was either a homemade or illegal artillery shell firework.
He went over into the middle of the street, and within 10 seconds of us talking to him, he lit it and all we saw was a cloud of smoke, a bang, Hanson said.
What Hanson saw next sent him immediately into shock, he said.
When I walked up to his body, it was nothing but his shoulders down, Hanson said this morning.

Actually you can’t legally buy a firecracker that will do any real damage today. As a boy, I usually scored a few cherry bombs and M-80’s, the latter of which would definitely remove digits under the right circumstances. Nothing remotely that large available now.
“The ones (Firecrackers) out there today are much more powerful. “
You can’t be talking about the stuff that was available in the 60’s.
“It landed on the roof of a factory, igniting a fire that burned for three days, doing $50 million damage, but at least no one was killed.”
Ouch!

When I was a kid a Black Cat with a fast fuse blew while I was holding it. Split my thumb open from the tip down to the first joint.
I would expect that more people died driving to/from fireworks shows than died from consumer (1.4) fireworks.
However, homemade fireworks are a good way to get blowed up.
Theoretically, this infernal machine was to be lit by an expert hand. It would then explode with the first, or lesser, explosion, which propelled an aerial charge of pure white TNT into the ambient air, theoretically vertical, for several hundred feet, and then - devastation! - not once, but several times, depending on the size of the bomb. It was not cheap, the smallest going for fifty cents and the largest for around three dollars, which in the days of the Depression was truly a capital investment. The mere sight of one of the larger specimens on the shelves of a fireworks stand sent waves of awe and excitement through the sparkler buyers. It was truly the big time."

Beer, hold my head...
True on all accounts, but there isn’t anything more american than blowing crap up, especially on the 4th of July.
Nah, just enjoy having fun. Just because you don't enjoy something, doesn't mean there's something wrong with those who do -- unless, of course, you're a liberal.
we had m-80’s in 69-71....quarter sticks of dynamite!
threw ‘em on our homecoming bon-fire....
did I mention that 71 was the last year they allowed the homecoming bonfire...?
The whole point of my comment is this: The story headline is misleading, it is designed to make people react they way you have, that is condemning fireworks. THIS WAS NOT A FIREWORK. It was a piece of ordinance from the military and should have been turned into the proper authorities.
The word fireworks should not even be used in this article, it is simply a liberal hit piece supporting the liberal talking point that people shouldn't have fireworks or firearms either since they are too stupid to use them properly.
This person did not go down to his neighborhood fireworks stand and buy this explosive device even though the headline and most of the article imply that he did.
Oh Yeah? Well I'm rubber, you're glue - what you say bounces off me and sticks to you!
"I didn't put that much powder in it" "You didn't?,
you mean I didn't?"
To his family, sorry for your loss.
The obvious:”heads will roll”over this incident.
