Perry Breaks With a Fellow Texan: Bush
New York Times ^ | July 5, 2011 | JIM RUTENBERG and JEFF ZELENY

Posted on 07/05/2011 9:15:40 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

AUSTIN, Tex. — Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican contemplating a presidential run, shares many attributes with the last man who ran for president from here, his predecessor and onetime patron, George W. Bush. He has the same straight-legged Texas swagger; the down-home, clipped speaking style; the desert-baked conservatism.

But in recent years, Mr. Perry has broken politically with Mr. Bush, questioning his credentials as a fiscal conservative, accusing him of going on “a big government binge” and playing down some of Mr. Bush’s accomplishments in Texas in light of his own.

Mr. Perry’s public statements exposed a long-simmering rivalry that had been little known outside of the political fraternity here but underscores the rightward drift of the Republican Party since Mr. Bush was president. More acutely, Mr. Perry’s criticism holds potential peril and benefit for him should he decide to mount a presidential campaign, allowing him to establish an identity distinct from Mr. Bush but risking a guerrilla campaign against him by the former president’s inner circle.

Mr. Perry, whose aides say will make a decision within weeks, has been meeting around the country with potential fund-raisers, and last week went to Colorado for a gathering of prominent conservative rainmakers held by members of the Koch family, which helped finance the Tea Party movement.....

On government spending, immigration and education, Mr. Perry’s criticisms of Mr. Bush have given him cachet with conservatives, especially with Tea Party voters who blame the former president for allowing spending and the reach of government to grow rapidly.

Those criticisms have burnished the Perry image as less prone to ideological compromise or a fuzzy “compassionate” brand of conservatism, an appealing trait to those Republican primary voters seeking purity in their nominee....

DISQUALIFIER Aug. 28, 2007——In Mexico for trade talks, Perry blasts US immigration policies
Houston Chronicle, Mexico City Bureau | DUDLEY ALTHAUS
FR Posted on 08/28/2007 by Dubya

MEXICO CITY — Leading a large delegation of Texas executives trying to drum up business in Mexico, Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday criticized the U.S. Congress for failing to pass an immigration bill that would legalize millions of workers. “I don’t think this is that difficult an issue if Congress would have the maturity to sit down and really discuss it and cut out all the mean rhetoric,” Perry said during a break in the third day of meetings with Mexican officials and business executives. Here is Perry's entire statement on SB 1070:

Texas has a rich history with Mexico, our largest trading partner, and we share more than 1,200 miles of border, more than any other state. As the debate on immigration reform intensifies, the focus must remain on border security and the federal government’s failure to adequately protect our borders. Securing our border is a federal responsibility, but it is a Texas problem, and it must be addressed before comprehensive immigration reform is discussed.

Recently, there has been much debate over immigration policy in Washington and what has been implemented in Arizona. I fully recognize and support a state’s right and obligation to protect its citizens, but I have concerns with portions of the law passed in Arizona and believe it would not be the right direction for Texas.

For example, some aspects of the law turn law enforcement officers into immigration officials by requiring them to determine immigration status during any lawful contact with a suspected alien, taking them away from their existing law enforcement duties, which are critical to keeping citizens safe. Our focus must continue to be on the criminal elements involved with conducting criminal acts against Texans and their property. I will continue to work with the legislative leadership to develop strategies that are appropriate for Texas.

Securing the border has to be a top priority, which is why I have a standing request with the federal government for 1,000 Title 32 National Guardsmen who can support civilian law enforcement efforts to enhance border security in Texas. I have also requested predator drones be based in and operate over the Texas-Mexico border to provide essential information about criminal activity to law enforcement on the ground.

Until the federal government brings the necessary resources to bear, we will continue to commit state funding and resources for additional border security efforts in order to protect our communities and legitimate cross border trade and travel, while enforcing the laws already on the books.

I don't see anything particularly RINO-ish about the statement. He disagreed with the approach of SB1070, and didn't think it was the best approach for Texas. I don't see him saying the issue should not be addressed, or saying that Arizona should not be allowed to try their approach. He DOES say the Feds need to be more aggressive in enforcing the law, so we can assume that he would take that approach if he were elected president.

OK, I get it — you are just waiting with bated breath for the day Perry does his announcement. I’m glad you have made a choice that works for you. I’ll try not to rain on your parade. Just FYI, I have a DD214 marked Honorable, too, though I don’t claim any superiority on conservatism or Constitutionalism because of it. Don’t know where that’s coming from...I never questioned your patriotism or Perry’s so you can just calm down on that.

As to rhetoric and demagoguery, seems like you are cornering the market on those attributes. I’ll try not to intrude on your Perry campaign echo chamber threads...I’m out.

I’m trying to figure out what the truth is here.

Perry is talking the talk right now but I’ve seen that a hundred times before going back to the 1970’s when I was young.

I’ve learned over the years that there is a political process going on that ignores the convictions of the average citizen in favor of compromise or outright deception. There is a lot of hustling coming from the politicians.

I can see the potential scenarios that may have played out, but I don’t claim to have proof of that.

I don’t want a fight with anyone or even to create one.

I want to get information out there to give us all a chance to think about these candidates more.

I’ve already identified flaws in Sarah Palin, but its true, we all have them including Perry and the others in this race.

I have my first preference, that’s obvious.

But I’m not here to hurt.

There you go again, trying to interpret what I think or believe. I am not waiting for Perry to get in. If he does, it would be a good thing, since he has a strong and successful record as Governor. Is he perfect? No. Is he honorable and conservative? Yes he is.

Either Perry or Bachmann would be acceptable, but in my view, Perry would do better to fix the mess Obama has created.

Which leads us to the real issue. We have no other options this coming election. We either win, or all is lost.

That was in 07 and I don’t believe anything happened in Perry’s favor? Did it? Do you even know?

Anyway, what do YOU think about post 111?

Rick Perry is a career politician. He was a Demonrat for decades, and turned Republican only when Texas moved to the right. He was the campaign manager for notorious sociopathic Demonrat Al Gore in 1988. In 2007, 20 years after pretending to turn Republican, Perry went to the far extreme of the Pubbie Party and supported 3x-married, pro-abortion Rudy Giuliant for President. When Rudy dropped out, Perry fell back to RINO John McCain. Don't believe all this hype to the effect that Perry is the salvation of the conservative movement. Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, and Herman Cain did not spend decades as Demonrats before belatedly deciding that the Pubbie Party was the best best.

Goodbye, Rick. We've seen your type before. Stay in Texas.

I've seen worse, I've seen better, until further notice and proof, I'm remaining skeptical that Perry will have a good policy for our borders.

If he runs he'll have to address it more clearly, much like Palin will have to do if she runs. If he gets anywhere near the amnesty act, or so called dream act, I'd be really upset and work against him if he runs.

Not according to the post I quoted. Anyway, my point is, even if YOU know who the tea party candidates are I think the average person does not. There is too much confusion, rules and general cr*p that designates one this and that. I guess the tea party needs to mail out flyers with the rules on them.

Cain and Bachmann are my candidates of choice right now and if Perry jumps in you can darn well bet (because how screwed up this economy is) I will jump on the "Out with Barry in with Perry" crowd. No, he is not perfect, gees, you have proven that, but no one is. 2cents worth. (probably 4)

Sorry if I drew a wrong conclusion but your defense of Perry was pretty strong when I was merely pointing out some areas that made me question his level of conservatism. I will also state that I fully agree with you that removing Obama in the 2012 election is beyond critical. We will probably just have to agree to disagree as to what shade of conservative Perry is. Bachman interests me as well as Cain. I admit Cain has little chance but I do like the way he influences the conversation.

I have my suspicions that the Perry haters are actual lefties
because Perry has been good for Texas and re-elected in different positions so many times.

First we have to have a real Republican Conservative, so far we don’t have one.

While I can name some “little l” libertarian concepts among my personal political philosophy, I can categorically state that I have never subscribed to the Libertarian platform as I find it devoid of moral substance on several matters, including any acceptance of anarchy as a desirable political state. I understand no person, politician or other, can ever mirror another’s political view to an absolute level of purity. I posted elsewhere in this thread about the best fit shoe analogy. Please take your lame “arian” (sic) accusations elsewhere.

Perry rode the TTC horse as far as he could until he realized it was going to have an unacceptable political cost, not that he changed his mind about the merits of the proposal. The first is mere political expediency, the second might indicate he altered his position as regards the principles behind the proposal.

If you care to come out of attack mode and have a discussion, I’m glad to engage in same.
