“13 millisieverts per year”

They get a lot more than this from a single xray.

... Japan urgently needs a comprehensive, long-term plan to deal with the issue,"

How did they clean up Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

If nitrogen injection in reactor #3 is accomplished before July 17th, probably evactuation advisories may be lifted in the ring between 20 and 30 km from Fukushima Daiichi.

Is anyone actually dead from Radiation from this?

As Ann Coulter pointed out, there are studies proving that there are healthful benefits to small amounts of radiation.

Some people actually PAY to go into radioactive mines for an hours worth of exposure.

Just sit down and wait as the radiactive elements disintegrate or are dispersed.

Everything and everyone here is paralysed and we feel left on our own, unsure whether it's actually safe for us to stay in the city...

Political fallout from a badly managed disaster...

The Japanese are paying with nuke inhalation again for blind overobedience and non-questioning of competency of authorities, all behind this hypocrite yakuza like oppressive posturing and some pseudo-patriotism versed in cowardice.

They have little changed since WWII culturaly... sheesh.

Some one needs to go Arakiri or to Jesus.

Well, number one wake-up and start dealing with the problem yourselves. Stopping waiting. Folks handle their own problems generally do better than others, and always do better then the deadly passive attitude in the quote.

The fact that the body of the article shows folks are indeed dealing with the problem on their own in their own ways is healthy.

Or maybe the authorties are so busy dealing with the meltdown that they’ve put small towns in the area on the back burner. The Japanese have acted with great dignity and honor during this disaster, but they need to refocus - and remember their citizens...

"They scoop up soil from their gardens
and dump it in holes dug out in parks and nearby
forests, scrub their roofs with soap and
refuse to let their children play outside."

Kind of reminds me of the stalwart citizens of New Orleans that pitched right in and rebuilt their own...er, wait a minute...aren't most of them still in Houston living in trailers? :-)

You have to give it to the Japanese...they are not afraid of hard work. And, they're known for their substantial comebacks.

The anti-nuclear power media, with Reuters at the forefront, is desperate to keep the Japanese nuclear power problems, which caused the death of nobody, in the news. In contrast, the 10 K dead from the tsunami have faded from the news.

Well, in the real world beyond what “Treme” portrays, yes, New Orleans problems are due to the people of New Orleans. Nothing worse in the world than waiting for help and waiting and waiting, and then when help comes being extremely ungracious because it took so long or wasn’t good enough or was done in a way that didn’t respect you.

Who, exactly, does the person who waits and waits respect? All my life I have had a passion—a passion against waiting. I am glad to see the Japanese share it.

I am amazed if there are only 10K dead from the tsunami. I doubt that number. It is a few times too low, imo. But I would be happy to be corrected if I am wrong.

Except they’re dumping the soil here and there. At public parks where children play and in rivers that provide drinking water.
