BROCKTON First came a barrage of gunfire last night; then a thunderous crash and fireball. Valter Monteiro and Adilson Tavares, two local men, were caught in the middle of it all.
Monteiro, 24, was fatally shot as he attempted to drive a gray-colored sedan from a housing development on 433 West Elm Street. Tavares sustained life-threatening wounds and is listed in critical condition, authorities said.
I dont know why this happened, my brother was trying to change his life around, said Luis Depina, 22, Monteiros brother, speaking this morning in front of the familys modest two-story home less than a half mile from the scene.

I heard a relative say “He was smart, he was intelligent, he played soccer.” Really, that was said.

The car crashed into the yard of a home where it came to rest (while on fire) against the homeowners car. The homewoners car then started to get burnt. The homeowners came out (husband and wife) and the wife bagan taking pictures of the scene while standing in her own yard. The Poluce arrested her for "interfering".

Poluce = Police.
The guy who was killed in this incident, also was shot when he was 20. Local TV reports said he had been at the Brockton Fair, once a nice family canival and agricultural expo, that had to put in metal detectors a few years ago, and has had lots of problems including gang fights and stabbings. Most folks I know, stopped going a long time ago. Brockton continues on its downhill slide.

My grandparents owned a home not too far from W Elm St for over 40 years. Relatives have lived there (no more) for over a 100 years.
Brockton is nothing like it used to be. There are parts now that are nothing more than barrios. I still visit graves up there and have to drive through it to get to the cemetery on the west side of town. It’s a sad trip.

Let's hazard a guess that those darn Amish were havin’ a gunfight in the ‘hood and things got out of control or maybe the Mexican drug gangs were doing their turf war impression?

Looks like nothing has changed still the “City with no Pity” it's been hard scrabble for decades now, bad cops, bad politicians....all the bad stuff Boston used to have they sent to Brockton......”Nice place to be from, wouldn't want to go back, or drive through now...” Cape Cod Pizza though might be worth taking the risk for...

You can easily see that he was working pretty hard at it too. Why do I think there is more to this story than we are reading?

You mean from the Cape Cod Cafe in Campello? I used to live right around the corner from there! The link below is a Google Maps street view of the place. I can't believe it is still there. Just look at that traffic plowing down Main St. ;-)

That's the one, The Enterprise just ran a reader submitted article on it's history.
link

appears it is still run by the same family too...
“In the late 1970s, Jim and Lynne Jamoulis ran the business. Today, the Cod is run by Jonathan and Jeremy Jamoulis and well into 2011, the famous Cape Cod pizza, the best pizza on the planet, has remained the same since 1950.”
I'd have to agree with the writer it's the best pizza! lol, I wonder if they'd do a mail order....maybe throw in a greek salad from Christo’s....

Thanks for the link. Amazing as hell that that place was there when I was a kid 40 years ago and was there for another 30 years before that.
I was born there, left, came back, lived a few years in my elementary years then my parents sold my grandparents’ house and we moved to Maryland.
Still I have lifelong friends that I go visit. Once took a girl to the BHS junior prom (and never set foot in the school myself :) go to Christo’s and the Tip Top (before it closed)... I really don’t know why I have such an attachment to a place I really didn’t live in that long.
Now I’m hungry!!
