Coastal California developers now must consider sea-level rise

If developer Dan Johnson and his team finally earn approval to revitalize a derelict lumber mill's 240-acre company town on the shores of Humboldt County, they'll be building homes with first floors 32 feet above ground.

The state's scientific advisers expect rising sea levels will hasten most of the California coastline's eastward push as it combines with storms or tsunamis. They say the few extra feet through 2100 will slowly make beaches of bluffs and marshes of beaches.

From Crescent City to San Diego, state and local planning authorities have started telling developers to factor sea-level rise into project designs.

California's diverse coastal terrain means every spot needs a unique and costly adaptation, frustrating both environmentalists and coastal property owners.

"There's a major tug between those who want to protect economic investment and those wanting to preserve natural habitat," said Curtis Fossum, the State Lands Commission's executive officer.

I thought they had a thousand other reasons they couldn’t build anything...they needed one more?

I don’t care what anyone says. As the center of everything degenerative in this country, Californians deserve every ill wind that blows their way.

They had better be more concerned with Snipe attacks. They can solve that problem with a large group of Democrats carrying flashlights and sacks and calling out loudly after dark, “Here, Snipe, Here, Snipe.”

Thousands of years from now, archeologists will postulate that the reason the front doors of these houses were placed 32 feet in the air is because of some weird religious belief.

They will be correct.

I wonder whether the far left freaks in Denver will require Sea Level Assessments before building in Colorado.

I always believed, and still do that the ability to see the future much less anything else through crystal balls by mumbling, and waving hands over them is/was just plain old BS, yet these Chicken Little, Sky is falling gloom, and doomer’s insist they can.

I have yet to see one of them produce the evidence. We must band together, and insist they show us their crystal balls.

(Left that one open for some ripe comment eh.)

it seems to me that if all the ice in the arctic and antarctic melted.....the sea level would go down.....whenever the ice in my drink melts....the glass does not run over.....

From whence will come the extra water to change sea level?

Reason #316 why I’m glad I live in South Carolina.

21 1/3 cubits.

You do know that "cubit" is considered a anti-female term?

Apparently, a "cubit" was the maximum length of a rod that could
be used to beat one's wife.

The "enlightened" above the hoi polloi have consigned that term to
the dustbin of forgotten history.
