2 Republicans Open Door to Increases in Revenue

By JOHN M. BRODER

WASHINGTON — Two senior Republicans said Sunday that they might be open to raising new government revenue as part of a deal to resolve the dispute over the federal debt ceiling, but they warned that there was little time to enact a comprehensive deal.

One of the senators, John Cornyn of Texas, said he would consider eliminating some tax breaks and corporate subsidies in the context of changes in the tax code, provided there was not an overall increase in taxes.

“I think it’s clear that the Republicans are opposed to any tax hikes, particularly during a fragile economic recovery,” Mr. Cornyn said on “Fox News Sunday.” “Now, do we believe tax reform is necessary? I would say absolutely.”

But he insisted that any changes in taxes be “revenue neutral,” meaning that the government would not take in any more money from individuals or businesses than it does now.

McCain is a super liberal politician. He is only a conservative during an election year.

That's not what Sarah Palin says. She believes McCain is a common sense conservative, because she has stated, numerous times, that is the only kind of candidate she will support.

(I know a couple of you are different, but) For the most part, you are all reacting like an emotional mob to the NYT’s spin, not doing your homework as you should as FReepers. In what universe do you live if you believe that the NYT is the least bit reliable???

If you want to know the truth - to see what Cornyn actually said - and how the NYT falsely spun it - Fox has the video up http://video.foxnews.com/#/v/1036571582001/sen-cornyn-on-debt-talks/?playlist_id=87485

The meat is around 7 minutes in.

That he doesn't do this is very telling. It says that McCain, at best, puts his self-interest above conservatives and his party. Much worse, it suggests that maybe his agenda is contrary to the interests of conservatives and the Republican party. Selfish jerk, or Machiavellian saboteur. It's a scary consideration.

And he takes money from conservatives under the guise of beating Obama, then throws the election and spends their money against a conservative primary opponent.

I’ve been following Cornyn lately, and the NYT didn’t sound accurate to me.

As for McCain - he accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in donation from George Soros, put into his Reform Institute. McCain is no conservative, and I stand by that observation.

With “Republicans” like John Cornyn, Texans need not criticize Republicans in other states who also cave to the Democrats.

Now is not the time for any tax “reform” or adjustments. If it is revenue neutral then what relevance does it have in reducing debt? Dems will play games and say its neutral when it isn’t. You can’t give them an inch or they take a mile.

The people standing in front of them are trying to get them to deal. Horsetrading with them this or that in exchange for their votes. The people they represent are all outside the beltway.

Most people - politicians especially - do not have the stones to disagree with someone when that person is right in their face giving them ramifications of disagreeing. They lose their nerve go along to get along.

That’s the problem with being a leader - and is why there are so few true leaders around. Sometimes - oftentimes even - you have to do things other people will find disagreeable.

I saw Senator Cornyn and he said Tax Reform was necessary, and that if overall rates were reduced, then current special deductions and credits could also be reduced to produce a revenue neutral result on a static scoring. He added that there wasn’t time to do this in the Debt Ceiling bill, so tax increases were off the table.

That's exactly what he said but those facts won't stop people here from screaming "RINO" and calling for his political scalp.

I understand you.

But most people don’t.

We need a flat tax so we do not get manipulated any more.

I bet I am the only one to respond to you because it is too hard to under stand.

You and I live for consevative politics but to most people it is hard to understand voodoo.
