The Electoral Illusions of Venezuela's Totalitarian Regime(Control of Venezuela without Chavez)
The Cutting Edge News ^ | September 27th 2010 | Luis Fleischman

On September 26, Venezuela held parliamentary elections. Since Hugo Chavez was elected to the presidency in 1998, Venezuela has been transformed from a country with democratic institutions to one where the president controls all branches of government. The elections serve the purpose of making Chavez look like he is presiding over a free society but in reality provide no real chance for change. In this context, it is important to understand the true nature of the present Venezuelan political reality.

Many observers, journalists and scholars have tried to define the Chavez regime. Some have referred to it as being neo-populist and others have called it an illiberal democracy. Neo-populist refers to a regime characterized by the mobilization of marginal masses led by a charismatic leader. Indeed, Chavez has established a direct and authoritarian relationship with the people and has redistributed state funds amongst the poor in order to secure their support and win legitimacy for his regime. The legislature, the judiciary and other branches of government and civil society have become subordinated to his will and executive authority. Such was the case with regimes like that of Juan Peron in Argentina in the 40s and 50s and with some differences the government of Getulio Vargas in Brazil in the 30s and 40s.

This article is a year old, but helps in understanding how Chavez has changed the nature of the government in Venezuela.

The tack he took has a strong parallel to the path taken by Obama. And the disregard for the law.

I think it is important to understand because Chavez is probably already dead. The other Commies are plotting to try and stay in power there.

Probably right about doornail status. Those who are holding the reins aren’t eager to stir up things by letting it out. Wonder how long before another ambitious one starts grabbing? Except for the poor folks in Venezuela, this’ll be fun to watch. Not many true Banana Republics left around anymore.

His only chance now is to get unemployment high enough to go after the unemployment vote. Add that to his communist base and win. He will try to turn unemployment insurance in to the “Dole”. The illiterate Venezuelans were easy targets.

I see lots of parallels with Obozo’s actions and those of Chavez.

I already see Obozo’s authoritarian methods. His Czars, his disregard for law and his utter arrogance.

How did “Barry the Commie Bastard” come to reside at 1600 Penn. Ave.?? What a mess.

He is a classic “strongman” el Presidente.

The opposition will likely fragment if he dies.

Yep, the illusion of a strong man.

The Paratrooper. (but pudgy now)

Fidel want to be.

I think he died at the hands of the wonderful (/sarcasm) Cuban medical profession.

obama has authoritarian tendencies in this term. It will become undeniable and obvious to all if he gets a second term.

If we had a REAL Pres. he would take out the Castros and Chavez in one action. That would cut off the intellectual Commie Crap coming out of Cuba and the money from Venezuela and help collaps Morales in Bolivia, Humula in Peru, Correa in Equador and the little perv in Nicaragua.

The civil war in Venezuela would clear out many of the slums and we could hope a Pinochet would take over and start the transformation of Venezuela into what Chile is today. We can hope!

A real President would first be one of US, instead of one of THEM.

The first step toward recovering our nation is to expose the Fraud that Obozo IS. The 2nd step is to expose those who put this "post turtle" where he is.

The difference, let’s hope, will be when nobama is voted out next Nov. Will he defy the Constitution and refuse to step down? A part of me hopes he tries this stunt, as it will be a very good demonstration of the power of the Constitution when he and his herd are escorted out and put on a plane, like his little friend in Honduras.

like his little friend in Honduras.

I so admire the Hondurans for how they handled Mel. Can you imagine plucking Obozo from the White Hut in his PJ's and flying him to the border of Mexico and turning him loose? hee hee hee
