California college students are bracing for higher tuition bills and fewer courses and campus services under a new state budget that once again slashes spending on higher education.
The budget signed Thursday by Gov. Jerry Brown inflicts the latest blow to California's renowned higher education system, which has helped make the state an economic powerhouse and served as a model for other states and countries.

i wonder what percentage of them voted for obama?
and brown?
they deserve what they voted for.
You know, the students could just take more in loans, or get a part time job. Radical ideas, I admit!
Yeah, whats another fifty grand? No problemo.
Hey lad you are so correct. The clowns in Sacto don’t give a
damn about the hardworking legal honest students like you and it appears that you’ve figured that out. Now start imparting this insite to your fellow students. Good Luck!
I have no problem with people being charged for their own education. These idiots will riots if they have to spend an extra buck.
Basket Weaving 101 might not be worth $25 more. heh
A sharp student would figure out a way to turn the
loss of services to his/her advantage...
I never understood why a republican would want the job. The same goes for president. Both parties have destroyed this country and a total “system restore” is the only thing that will repair it.
I made it thru CA higher ed with no loans and no rich parents. Can’t ply ball either. Like you, I attended community college, then Cal-State.
When I attended Modesto Junior College it was $10 a unit. That’s equivalent to being free. There was no way they could keep that up.
Moved to L.A. in 1994. Don’t ask why. Went to get tags on the car. I had a choice. Pay to have a smog device installed or pay a fee and not have the device installed. The price to have it installed was, surprise, the exact amount as the fee. The California native standing behind me went ballistic. He suddenly realized that it wasn’t about smog. It was about money.
How about cutting professor salaries by 25%?? And that would just be a start.
I can only hope that was tongue in cheek because it makes no sense whatsoever.
The United States is quickly facing a massive problem in that higher education is ridiculously expensive. We really think we’re going to continue to churn out doctors who are 300k in debt and rising?
More loans? Seriously?
The question is 1) why are expenses rising so quickly in colleges across the country and 2) why aren’t unneeded departments being slashed?
It’s time universities quit spending so much money on buildings and pensions and stopped wasting so much money on grants in the form of financial aid and went on a bit of a diet.
Instead they just keep passing it along to the students.
It’s ultimately very unproductive.
Make ‘em work the farms for tuition assistance.
Yep, and also people should be aware that despite the rhetoric, college isn’t for everyone. And further, some thought should be given before personally investing in a major.
Not tongue in cheek.
First, college isn’t for everyone and students should make a sober evaluation as to whether or not college is even for them.
Then, they should make a sober evaluation about a good, marketable major.
Then, they should make a sober evaluation as to whether or not the degree is a good investment for them.
More loans isn’t the problem. Big loans for worthless degrees is the problem.
