The Nile Monitor is a uniquely nasty lizard. Careless breeders in Homestead are primarily responsible for its invasion.

Then why have the damn things in Florida at all? Maybe in a Zoo where you really have professional wildlife people is one thing. But that's the only place where you should have this Lizard.

What about the Burmese python in the Everglades. Do the authorities have any clue as to how these snakes are getting into the Everglades? They didn't swim here from Burma. Someone brought in these snakes. Why should anyone except a Zoo have these Snakes? They are dangerous as hell and not native to the area. Why should you be able to buy one of these animals in a pet shop?

Nile monitors in Florida? Are they left over from looking for Hanging Chads in 2000?

#17 - re filing an Environmental Impact statement about killing monitors. EASY.

It would read like this:

Saw monitor lizard. Hit monitor lizard in the head with a sledge hammer. Took lizard away for bbq. No fuss, no mess. THe only “impact” was on his head”.

Love, Bubba

#22 - That was not Tegu Lizard.

Aggressive, chasing people and biting off fingers - that’s HELEN THOMAS.

Tastes like the other white meat. YUCK.

From the article: “They took the dark brown and mottled yellow reptile to a remote area. “I euthanized it with my agency-issued handgun,” Officer Jon Garznaniti reported.”

I’m sure the animal was happy it wasn’t an unauthorized handgun.

Roasted lizard is very tasty; I’ve had it in Vietnam.

These big monitor lizards would be good for slabs of wonderful light, white meat with a very nice delicate flavor.

The answer to invasive species is almost always recipes for those things. Run contests in newspapers.

1. Why would a person want a lizard for a pet?
2. What kind of person wants a lizard for a pet?

inquiring minds would like to know.

______________

I only knew one person who had a lizard pet. She was a biker chick, who eventually married a Ku Klux Klansman. I sort of let the association lapse after that, so can provide no further details.

Basically , mentally ill people who want to scare normal people have highly dangerous pets.

Personally,if it were in my power I would ban the importation, breeding, release, and private ownership of all non-native species. Deliberate release of a venomous creature would be a capital offense.

Only licensed zoos that had adequate cages should have any of these animals.

Your reply is precisely the problem with some state regulations that are based more on emotion than science. Your personal dislike of an animal is not grounds for banning everyone from having it. Nor is its potential danger. There are in place substantial controls and restrictions on the sale of genuinely dangerous animals in the pet trade.
Like it or not, however, there are otherwise responsible people who have a right to possess animals from the natural world. This does not mean that I am in favor of the uncontrolled ownership of all animals.
Responsible ownership is basic to the health of the pet trade. There are very few owners of exotic pets who do not care for them, particularly considering the substantial investment they make in their ownership, care and maintenance.
One of the most important policies for local pet shops is to accept all animals that can no longer be kept by their owners. Sometimes this means working with shelters or state agents to place an animal. There is always a good alternative to releasing an exotic animal into the wild.
Pet owners develop strong attachments to their pets. When they are no longer able to care for them, most search out an appropriate placement.
My shop receives animals, especially tropical fish, nearly every day as rescues. The hobbyist is able to use their facilities to house other, usually smaller, animals and we are able to offer a wider variety of mature animals to other hobbyists by accepting these rescues.
Are you getting any of this or are you stuck in a frame of mind that rejects all ownership of exotic pets, especially those you find particularly abhorrent?

It's not my personal dislike that's at stake. There is the health and safety of the public. There can also be extreme economic consequences from invasive species. These animals can destroy the fishing in an area. They can reek havoc in agriculture and wildlife. We've seen this over and over.

there are otherwise responsible people who have a right to possess animals from the natural world.

Really? A right to possess animals from the natural world. Just where in the US Constitution or any state Constitution is there a right to possess animals from the natural world. And does this imply that you have the right to possess any type of animal? It's one thing to walk down the street with my Labrador Retriever. It's another thing to walk down the street with a Timber Wolf. It's illegal in my area to have a wolf or even a Hybrid that's more than 50% Wolf. So the state of California has banned Hybrids to a degree. And it's absolutely illegal to have a Wolf unless you have a special license like a zoo or an animal park. So there is no right to possess animals.

I don’t see a reason why the possession of exotic and dangerous non-native species should be permitted by the state.

Lizards like the Nile and Tegu are very dangerous to people and normal pets. Many of the snakes I listed previously are owned by private individuals who keep them in small aquariums.

Hard freezes aren’t too common in Southern or even Central Florida.

Yes it is emotional not to want some pot head living in a crap house to own a black mamba.

I don’t give a crap, if any one of em ever hurts one of mine it will be with emotion I hunt down every one of you ‘exotic pets’ dealers and plant you.

1. Booms for antitorpedo netting. If the ship was anchored (or moving at less than 6 kts), they could be extended, and a steel net hanging from them would stop a torpedo boat sneak attack.

2. British, HMS Nile (did you see what I did there? - Nile Monitor). It's nowhere ugly enough to be a late 19th century French ship. Think oil refinery mounted on Noah's Ark hull

contemporary French Marceau

That sounds like a lot of fun.

I just want to take advantage of this conversation to point out to anyone reading, always be careful with using NFA weapons, even for home defense or hunting.

A lawyer friend who deals in the field pointed out something scary. Say you see somebody about to steal your motorcyle out front. You go out, and confront them with a 20” barreled semi AR-15. They can call the cops, claim they were about to ask for directions and say that you you were menacing them. If the cop doen’t like guns, you’ll get charged with menacing, a relatively minor charge. You may even be found guilty if the perps are believable enough in court. It’s a small charge, the penalty isn’t that bad, and you probably won’t even get time.

Go out with the same AR with a properly papered 14” barrel, and that minor menacing charge comes with a 30 year mandatory adder-on for committing a felony with an NFA type weapon (SBR). It was deigned to disuade bank robbers from using machine guns, but according to my friend, it applies to all felony charges - even minor ones. It even affects home defense issues where the speed with which things unfold, unusal circumstances and murky memories can cause legal issues.

In a scenario where penalties are already high enough, his take was NFA weapons are best left to the range.

Just an FYI - government is not your friend. Keep your ass covered.
