Leader of Pima County's GOP faces removal effort (Criticizing botched SWAT raid that killed Guerena)

Pima County Republican Party leaders voted late Thursday to take party chairman Brian Miller’s keys to the GOP headquarters away and call a special meeting to try to remove him from his post.

Miller has been under fire from party stalwarts for the past month, with multiple meetings called in recent weeks after he criticized a SWAT raid in May that resulted in the shooting death of a man law enforcement officers said they suspected of involvement in drug dealing.

Several elected officials and party leaders have complained that his comments pitted the party against law enforcement at a time when city elections are looming and candidates are gearing up for bigger 2012 races.

After questions were raised about the amount of police force used in serving a search warrant Miller said he hoped the incident would foster community discussion of “the policies that routinely lead to heavily armed and militarized local police invading private homes and a renewed interest in the civil liberties codified in our Bill of Rights.”

After Miller refused to resign, the executive committee voted 10-2 to order Miller to cease and desist from acting as an agent of the county committee and return his keys.

Barney Brenner, a member of the committee who voted to seek Miller’s removal, said he wished Miller had resigned to help heal the party.

Brenner said the action doesn’t reflect a rift between more libertarian-leaning Republicans, like Miller, and other more traditional party members.

“This is solely about the best interests of the Pima County Republican Party,” Brenner said, adding regardless of whether Miller meant it to happen, his words damaged the party and the ability of its candidates to raise money and support.

Miller said it is the executive committee that has kept the controversy in the forefront, by continuing to call these meetings to complain about his leadership.

He said he’s been consistent in defending the constitution.

“This is a political witch hunt,” he said, adding, “If they wanted it dropped, they would have dropped it three weeks ago.”

The meeting has yet to be scheduled. A two-thirds vote of the elected precinct committeemen will be required to remove him from office.

Miller said if he survives, he will then call a special meeting of his own to ask the precinct committeemen to vote on the performance of each member of the executive committee.

How many shots would you fire if you were the cop trying to serve a warrant on a marine with a gun who lives in a world where he expects other drug runners to do a home invasions on him, just like he does on others?

I’d like to meet the cop who would volunteer to risk his life to politely knock on the door to serve that warrant.

Ok, that’s enough. Either back up your bull bleep with verifiable sources that DO NOT have an axe to grind in this matter, such as ANY LOCAL LE, or start apologizing for besmirching a young man who served his country honorably, was by all accounts an honorable man, and was ruthlessly gunned down by some useless breathers with badges and guns they were never qualified to carry.

Cops serving warrants knock on doors and allow homeowners the opportunity to answer.

Criminals breaking into homes kick them down and gun down anyone getting in their path.

Stop slinging mud on the honor of this marine, whose crimes did not mandate the death penalty.

Did he receive: trial by jury or execution?

Which would you prefer to receive? Trial by jury, or execution?

There is also this:

Jose Guerena was arrested in 2009 but not charged for drug possession, having drug paraphernalia and weapon misconduct.

Arrested but not charged. I’m so SURE that makes him eligible for summary execution by the SWAT scumbags. And that’s the best you got? What’s the source for this? Would it be local LE than stands to gain by smearing this young Marine?

Drug possession is not an executable offense.

Do you believe that SWAT teams ought to execute citizens for even minor violations of the law?

Would you approve of a citizen being gunned down because he had too many speeding tickets? How about a busted tail light?

Would you approve of a SWAT team coming to your home and executing you if you committed a non-executable offense?

I’m with Miller on this. I sure don’t appreciate a SWAT team showing up in a residential neighborhood and shooting holes through houses without regard for the occupants in the other houses. If someone is considered so dangerous that a SWAT team is needed to serve a SEARCH warrant, then maybe the neighborhood should be evacuated. Or maybe the subject should be detained prior to the search warrant being executed.

The Republican party in Pima County is obviously filled with a bunch of cowards. And the day that Ruth McClung wrote on her Facebook that she stands with law enforcement apparently with no regard to the rightness of their actions was the day I decided to no longer stand with her. Maybe she likes poorly planned and executed SWAT raids in her neighborhood.

I am not a cop hater. On the contrary. But I will not support injustice.

I’m trying to figure out where it comes under the general heading of the govt being there to protect the citizenry.

Well, you know, some citizens have to be more equal than others. Apparently, Jose Guerena and his family are in the....less equal category.
