AUSTIN - The just-concluded 82nd Legislature has armed Gov. Rick Perry with a host of red-meat issues to present to conservative Republican voters if he jumps into the wide-open presidential primary race.
But analysts say some of those issues could carry consequences down the road in reaching broader constituencies in a general election match-up against President Barack Obama.
Texas' longest-serving governor burnished his conservative profile with legislative victories that included a no-tax budget with $15 billion in cuts, property rights protections, voter ID legislation and a bill requiring sonograms before abortions.
Two other Perry-backed issues - an immigration measure to ban so-called sanctuary cities and legislation to prohibit intrusive airport pat-downs - could also enhance the Texas governor's stature among conservative activists though they ultimately died in the Legislature.
Even without declaring, Perry is becoming an early favorite among Tea Party activists for his adherence to limited government and his verbal assaults on Washington. Sabato's Crystal Ball, an online analysis headed by much-quoted political observer Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia, places Perry in the top tier of 11 announced and unannounced candidates. And I am not sure that there can be “sanctuary cities in Texas. It boils down to enforcing State law or not?
Anytime governor Rick Perry is mentioned, Free Republic seems to turn into something resembling Democratic Underground.
Posts regarding Perry are peppered with profanity, vulgarity and downright fabrications- the likes of which is seldom seen on Free Republic.
This is hardly in the best interests of our Conservative agenda. The Loony Left does not need any help from us in

All (including Democrat opponents) have called him a staunch Conservative, and not one of the dozens issuing opinions has mentioned the vaccine or TTC.
Apparently they don’t consider these things an issue. They DID mention Perry threatening to secede from the unionas a strike against him.

Compared to Romney, Newt, Huntsman and the rest of JOKES running for President, governor Rick Perry is a rock star.
We need somebody who can WIN this thing. That means somebody with cross-over appeal, which our Palen, Bachmann and Cain (no matter how much we love them) simply do not have.
Until 1989, Rick Perry was a conservative Democrat. He switched parties as, like many Democrats including Ronald Reagan and Phil Gramm, he saw that party moving farther and farther to the left. Under Perry’s decade as governor, hundreds of Texas Democrats have followed his lead and become Republicans. As a former Democrat, Perry can speak to that swath of his former party that has become disenchanted with their party as President Obama has taken it even farther to the left, in a way that few Republicans can. He can also speak well and credibly to all wings of the national GOP, from the fiscal cons to the social cons to the libertarian set.
He would appeal to all segments of the Republican electorate and would come armed with a record of economic success and a commitment to liberty that no other contender can match.
Texas has been voted #1 business climate for the last seven years.
Texas has been getting all of California’s jobs.
Perry must be doing something right.
We need a good business guy right now.

Hey, I am a Conservative if there ever was one. And I am not a Ron Paul freak either. I have said nothing vulgar or viscious about Perry. I just think every voter should reserve their trust for the candidate who shines the brightest in the end.l Hopefully, if we do our job right, that candidate should be the one we need in this place in time. Perhaps there is no one who can turn the country around, but let’s try to find the one most equipped to do so.
There was a great tribute to George Washington on the radio last night. I’ve read a great deal about Washington. He was blessed by God because he blessed God. What we really need is another George Washington.

Rising Crime
One of the biggest concerns to Houstonians is the increase in crime in a city that was already fighting a pre-Katrina rising crime rate. Since opening its doors to the evacuee's Houston has experienced a 5.8 percent increase in violent crime in the past 11 months.
The rise in crime was predictable as the Houston population increased almost overnight changing the ratio of police officers per thousand Houstonians to 1.9 compared to 2.3 before Katrina, already down from the national average of 2.8.
Calls to the police department jumped from an average of five calls on hold before Katrina to averaging 40-plus after the storm. "We used to have five calls holding, then it was 30, 40, 50, 60 calls holding or left over," said Officer John M. Trevino of the 19th District.

Im not sure what point you are trying to make. Houston has had a Dem mayor since 1982. There are three districts (Central and North Houston, East Houston, SW Houston) which send democrats to office. Sheila Jackson Lee’s has gone Dem since 73, Al Green’s since ‘97, and Gene Green’s has always been democrat.
So I think that does give credence to the fact that Houston, a democrat city, wants its city to act this way. Their sheriff, along with Dallas’, is a hispanic democrat.

Then what should he have done? Should he have moved the Texas Guard to the border and check ID’s and turn away anyone coming from New Orleans? In the US, people can move between states at any point for any reason.
Travis County is a very liberal bastion. Everything that comes out of any media there is so slanted that you can’t believe anything that comes out of their mouths. Rick Perry is a cartoon caricature of what’s wrong with Texas and national politics.
He’s not going to ‘resonate with conservatives’, because he’s not one. Being pro-life isn’t enough to recuse him on nearly every other issue dear to conservatives.
His only appeal is to old southern democrats. There are maybe two states outside the former confederacy where he will be a factor in the primaries.
