Cubas leading dissident, Oscar Elias Biscet, said he was shaking with happiness as he learned Thursday that rock star and social activist Bono had sung his praises during a jam-packed U2 concert in Miami.
The 73,000-strong audience at the Sun Life stadium roared with delight Wednesday when Bono urged support for the 49-year-old Biscet and declared that some day soon Cuba will be free.
As you read me what he said, I was shaking with happiness because it showed its good when one is chosen as a symbol of his people, Biscet told El Nuevo Herald, which first told him of Bonos comments.
Hes praising not me but all my people, all Cubans, he added in a telephone interview from his home in Havana. And I agree that Cuba will be free, if people like Bono join the cause of human rights on the island.
Biscet, a physician awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush in 2008, was released from prison in March after serving eight years of a 25-year sentence for acts against the sovereignty and independence of Cuba.
Bono praised Biscet during a segment of the U2 concert where the Irish band pays homage to human rights and people walk around the stage carrying paper lanterns with the symbol of the London-based Amnesty International.
Wed like to do something weve never done before, Bono announced as he asked the audience to hold up their hands during the song Walk On. A beautiful man, a doctor who spent time in the prisons of Cuba. He was released. His name is Doctor Biscet.
I want you to hold him up and let everyone in Cuba know he is special to us and we are watching, we are watching.

Sometimes I like Bono.
Bono standing up to Castro and supporting Cuban freedom fighters, he just went up a quite a few notches in my book.
I’m not a big fan of their music, but I really enjoy Achtung Baby. I only know about it because my older sister bought the album in high school and listened to it on cassette constantly while she drove us.
Always interesting comments on Castro articles in the Herald. Basically hard working Cuban-Americans who know what they are talking about vs. young, unemployed liberals who just want to feel good about themselves.
How could you not be a fan of U2? The catalog is huge, Left,Right ,Middle, it’s all good with U2...
counter-revolutionary
I don’t like him but he is really going to upset some leftists with this one.
I saw my 14th U2 show in Baltimore on June 22nd. It is the first one I had the opportunity to take my 12 and 10 year old kids to. They loved it. They are one of the greatest bands of all time and their catalog of hits is stunning...
In addition I’ve heard some make the comment that they boarder on being a Christian rock band. Which I can agree.
Really... their music is good. The Joshua Tree for me, in high school, was just absolutely an album that lifted...
Yeah, I played “40” for my wife once...she was stunned by that one. She didn’t think Bono had that kind of depth
I waited patiently for the Lord
He inclined and heard my cry.
He brought me right out of the pit,
out of my miry clay.
I will sing a new song,
How long to sing this song?
He set my feet upon a rock,
and made my footsteps heard.
Many will see,
Many will see and fear.
I will sing, sing a new song.
How long to sing this song?
I’m really impressed by those of you caught up in the Bono worship. I’m sure he’s a really amazing “artist.”
Unfortunately, he’s a flim-flam man who works really hard to hide his own fortune while screeching that our government is guilty for failing to pour more of our hard earned treasure into third world thugacrocies.
He wants socialism, let him lead the way. Pay him $10 per hour on stage and make him fly coach.
Cheer up grumpy.
I never saw U2 there but Red Rocks is a great place to hear a concert BTW.
We went yesterday down to Vandy to see what we could
of the prep work for tonights show. The stage is immense.
They said there were 100 tractor trailer loads.Got some
good pics.
This will be our first U2 concert, lookig forward to seeing
the “Claw” whatever that is.I`m sure it will be spectacular
This will be the equal to the Pink Floyd show at Vandy I
bet.
Gonna be a long day,we`re pumped up
14 U2 concerts...wow..
Yep...did that in Detoit back in 1985...ah...those were the days...
