It would appear you're correct; I see references to Ed.D. on some CDs he has for sale on the Internet.
There's a lot of information missing from this particular article, compared to several related stories. Kenney had permission from the school board to demonstrate hypnosis in a group setting, but not one on one. At least one set of parents agreed to his hypnotizing their son. The time lines between sessions and suicide varied.
