There have been attempts to divide CA into two or three states in the past. Generally this has come from folks in the north and opposed by the pols from the LA area who exercise a disproportionate share of influence.
The key to this is water.

The proposed, seceding counties of CA would most likely vote Republican. They’ve been suggesting this for years, but it won’t happen.

We drove through northern California a few months ago. There’s a barn right alongside the I-5 with ‘State of Jefferson’ on the roof. They’d just love to be free from the Southern Californians!
