Russia to start supplying submarines in Vietnam in 2014

ST. PETERSBURG, July 1 (RIA Novosti)

Russia will start supplying Kilo class diesel submarines to Vietnam in 2014, a representative of state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport said on Friday.

The submarines are equipped with "Club-S cruise missile systems," Oleg Azizov said.

Russia and Vietnam signed a $3.2-billion contract on the delivery of submarines in December 2009 during the visit of Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to Russia. This is the largest deal in the history of Russian exports of naval equipment.

Kilo class submarines, nicknamed "Black Holes" for their ability to avoid detection, are considered to be among the quietest diesel-electric submarines in the world.

The submarine is designed for anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface-ship warfare, and also for general reconnaissance and patrol missions.

The vessel has a displacement of 2,300 tons, a maximum depth of 350 meters (1,200 feet), a range of 6,000 miles, and a crew of 57. It is equipped with six 533-mm torpedo tubes.

At least 29 Kilo class subs have been exported to China, India, Iran, Poland, Romania and Algeria.

Russia will sell anything to anybody for a buck.

They make a dollar and the world can look out for itself.

"The United States would recognize the devil if we could sell him pitchforks." Will Rogers 1930.

It's all about $$. We are as guilty as the Russians are of providing our enemies with a means to harm us if not destroy us.

However, I betcha there are one or more of these puppies with an Iranian logo bouncing around the Med. Sea off Latakia as we speak...

Chinese carrier killer..one almost has to wonder if the Russians planted some as yet to be activated device in the keel of the boat BEFORE they sold it to the Chicoms..

IMO, this is ALL about the Spratleys.....

Vietnam is not our enemy...

I'll relate lesson taught to me one day in the Persian Gulf. I was stationed in the Marine Detachment on the USS Ranger, CV-61. We had a Russian destroyer from the CIS Black Sea Fleet working with our battle group. I was leaning on the rail watching it in the distance. Standing next to me was a grizzled old Gunny Sgt (Vietnam vintage). I made the off-hand comment, "I never thought I'd see the day that the Russians were our friends, and not our enemies."

Without even turning to me the Gunny growled, "Cpl, make no mistake about it, they are still our enemies. They don't care one whit about us, and will turn on us as soon as it is in their best interests."

I mulled it over, and he was right. The only thing that is keeping any country on good terms with us is convenience, even our staunchest allies. These subs will be a bigger thorn in China's side than ours for the foreseeable future. The are still a threat to the US Navy, and as a country we forget that at our own peril.
