Is Sarah Palin Bachmann's Goldwater?
The American Spectator ^ | 06/21/2011 | Jeffrey Lord

Posted on 06/29/2011 8:32:43 AM PDT by RockinRight

Is Bachmannia replacing Obamamania? Has Sarah Palin elected Michele Bachmann? Have liberals who spent the better part of the last three years scornfully pouring vitriol on Sarah Palin helped Minnesota Congresswoman Bachmann -- like Palin an attractive conservative working mother of five (don't forget the 23 foster kids) from the American working class -- to a place on the GOP ticket instead? In one of the more delicious ironies in the history of presidential politics? After all this time of insisting Palin was (pick one) "profoundly stupid" (MSNBC's Chris Matthews), "dumb as a brick" (Young Turk's Cenk Uygur, now with MSNBC), "ridiculous and dangerous" (Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post) or "ignorant" (Slate) -- and this is the printable stuff (the unprintable Bill Maher here) --America is awaking to a vaguely familiar political memory. He (or she) who goes first -- catches all the arrows. And the next one, or sometimes the one after that -- that next person from the same religious or ethnic group, the next one in line in the once always ignored gender or political philosophy -- gets the prize.

Bachmann has made some pretty bad gaffes, yes...but this article makes some interesting points.

I just pointed out earlier that Palin is more a Goldwater than a Reagan...and this guy seems to agree.

I'm not trying to be flamed, rather, start an intelligent debate, the kind we used to have here before we split off into "Run Sarah Run" vs. "Sarah's Great But Can't Win".

The media like Bachmann. She is controllable (team, controllers (rollins), she is NOT independent of the establishment. Palin is undeniably independent!!!! PALIN MUST RUN and WIN. WAKE UP.

If true, I hope Palin doesn’t end up like Goldwater. A sour and dour old man who was angry that the conservative torch he re-lit in this country was carried on by others to fruition.

Let's quit tearing each other apart and creating unnecessary wounds. Remember, the real objective is to retire the Commie in Chief! And remember the 2008 primary cycle. I'm fine with Palin, and I'm fine with Bachmann. Bachmann is running, and she's taking off like a missile in the polls. Her style and background, and ability to connect... she'd make a fine candidate and a fine president. Ditto Sarah Palin.

I will not attack either one of these fine, God-fearing ladies. We would be privileged to have either one as our Madam President.

Sarah Palin walks point to save this Nation. Right behind her is Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, among others.

Interesting article. FReepers would do well to read it fully before commenting.

I am amazed at what a lightening rod Sarah Palin has become. The left is demonstrably obsessed with her. Her base is worshipful in much the same manner as Obama’s core base is worshipful of him.

That last sentence alone will get me flamed.

All I want is Obama defeated. Even a RINO like Mitt Romney would be better than Obama. I don’t have a favorite yet. The race is still forming, why should I pick before I have all the information? By the time of Ohio’s primary, I’ll make a choice.

I will say this, Mrs. Palin touring as an non-candidate is really screwing up the MSM. They don’t know if it’s raining or Tuesday when it comes to Sarah Palin. They want to attack, they are sharpening their knives, but she’s not a candidate... yet, if ever. It’s all quite entertaining.

I think one reason Palin does not have to end up like Goldwater is the alternative media. The MSM trashing of her is giving exposure to a counter viewpoint that was not there in Goldwater's time.

Are we at the tipping point for alternative vs. mainstream media? That has yet to be seen.

That’s my view as well. I think Bachmann is solidly and unquestionably conservative... but she’s a dutiful “company man.” I tend to much prefer Palin’s style of westerny indpendence, and not being beholden to the usual crowds of players that historically control politics.

And I like Bachmann too. But, as you asy, she is controllable (team, controllers (rollins)), she is NOT independent of the establishment. And that means that after a short period of time, it would just be SSDD.

-"Her base is worshipful"

Not really. You really don't understand it, or obviously have any clue why people support Sarah Palin.

It's because of WHAT she REPRESENTS - combined with the fact that her track record of what she has ACCOMPLISHED, against the ODDS, against the ESTABLISHMENT (yes 'Republican', crony, corrupt establishment), is clearly a THREAT to many that lie in her path!

That's all.

I like Palin (not worship) because she is what you aee. She stands by her principals wheather you like them or not. She cowtoes to no one. She is fearless and loves her country. She would just as soon fire a Republican as she woould a democrat. And what else can the MSM throw at her? They can tell you what she had for breakfast in the 3rd grade. Bane one peerson that has undergone this kind of scrutiny. And she still remains as Sarah. Love of family, country and has integrity.

Palin is not Goldwater (he was an ideological ‘doctrinaire’ conservative, Reagan was a ‘common folks’ conservative). I hardly see the similarities of Palin to Goldwater. If there are, show me the ‘beef’.

“The media like Bachmann.”

LOLOLOL ... Just two days ago, the media WARNED that they would be getting the dirt on Bachmann, with a headline, “Bachmann under scrutiny”. Have no doubt, there is no real media love for Bachmann, just like when the media ‘loved’ Huckabee for a millisecond.

ANY conservative candidate WILL get bashed when the time comes. BEFORE the time comes, they get ignored. They are warming up to “palinize” Bachmann. Hence the ‘flakey’ questions and, just as they do with Palin, regugitating quotes with “I cant believe she said this ...”.

My fav, Herman Cain, is clearly not getting enough traction, because the media deliberately ignores him. #3 in latest poll yet media spends more time on no-hope candidates like Huntsman. Once he does get enough traction, the media will have a story on how as CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, he scolded an employee and/or made bad pizza, etc.

“Palin is undeniably independent”
That doesnt say much; so was Perot. I’d prefer a solid and steady conservative with strong principles and good leadership characteristics. Palin isnt running right now so we have to look among the running candidates for who best fits the reqts; there are pros and cons to all the candidates, dont just bash a candidate just because you think she might steal the spotlight from Palin.

I didn't think we were comparing ideology in this discussion, but the aspect of being the first one of a new movement. The “leader catches all the arrows” aspect of Palin to Bachmann.

I'm not going to flame you, but I will tell you that I think you are mistaken. Obama was "worshiped" based on nothing more than 'hopey-changey' and willful ignorance. Palin supporters are not 'worshipful', we are enthusiastic. And our enthusiasm is based on objective research of the woman, her record, her qualifications, and her experience. Do you really, truly not understand the difference between the two?

I have high regards to Jeffrey Lord at the American Spectator.

But my highly biased personal opionion is that Bachmann is not in the same league, as his list of Smith-Kennedy, Reagan-Goldwater comparison, as Palin.

I’ll omit the Jesse Jackson-Barack Obama analogy, as neither one of them offer substance except for race.

To say Bachmann is the thinking man’s Palin at this point is laughable. Time will tell, we will see.

I’m with you. I know in the end we will all do the glass thing for our nominee. I know I will, no matter who it is. We must.

We have some great declared candidates, and I remain hopeful that no matter if they are thought too conservative by some Independents that those Independents will still cheerfully fall in with us and our nominee in the general.

Your humor with Sarah’s non-candidacy candidacy, is enviable. I need to work on that. But I’m all in for sticking together. :)
