I was a strong opponent of same-sex marriage. Fourteen years ago, Andrew Sullivan and I forcefully debated the issue at length online (at a time when online debate was a brand new thing).
Yet I find myself strangely untroubled by New York state's vote to authorize same-sex marriage -- a vote that probably signals that most of "blue" states will follow within the next 10 years.
I don't think I'm alone in my reaction either. Most conservatives have reacted with calm -- if not outright approval -- to New York's dramatic decision.
Why?
The short answer is that the case against same-sex marriage has been tested against reality. The case has not passed its test....
If people like me had been right, we should have seen the American family become radically more unstable over the subsequent decade and a half.
Instead -- while American family stability has continued to deteriorate -- it has deteriorated much more slowly than it did in the 1970s and 1980s before same-sex marriage was ever seriously thought of.
By the numbers, in fact, the 2000s were the least bad decade for American family stability since the fabled 1950s. And when you take a closer look at the American family, the facts have become even tougher for the anti-gay marriage position.
Middle-class families have become somewhat more stable than they used to be. For example: College-educated women who got married in the 1990s were much less likely to get divorced than equally educated women who got married in the 1970s.
What's new and different in the past 20 years is the collapse of the Hispanic immigrant family....

Hey, I kinda like that, Jim. Maybe we could set up a hierarchy of zot terms for retreads. Somewhere in there, we need to get zit situated...

Darkwing, I just love your graphics. That zombie cat is one of my favorites. Viking Kitties will dine on your carcass, indeed! Your stuff is delightful.
Thanks for all the pings.
Yet another way the feds screw up states. I thought that all you had to do was get a work visa.
I know many companies that sponsor aliens (legal way) and get them work visas. But I’m sure the red tape is awful.
Basically, as usual, the federal government screwed it all up. But didn’t the unions have the foresight to realize that the liberal Dems they spend their dues money on were not going enforce the law? Unions are so stupid.
I don’t get it. Make the law impossible to work with legally and then just look the other way to get votes? This is insane when we are going bankrupt giving them freebies and I don’t like the election system being abused. Elections are the backbone of our republic and we have to be able to trust the results.
Yes, we need to go back to what works and make the business accountable for what should be very simple paperwork after a simple vetting process.
But this time around I want the borders protected and the system fixed BEFORE any talk of a process to legalize those that are here. We got lied to in 1986 (wow, Dems lie?).

Cool! Low-carb Re-ZOT. I’ll look for it at my local pharmacy tomorrow. Thanks.
Indeed. Retreads should always lay low.
This one posts threads everytime.
Amazing, innit?
Thanks for picking up on that.
No matter what he says, he's not a conservative, is he?
And you joined last week and that was your first post?

Something old, something not so new, something borrowed, something blue-own away.
Hmmmmm
a big ole puss filled Zit all ready and primed for squishing.
I didn’t say the majority white vote went Dem, just WAY too much of it. 43% was nothing to sneeze at.
I don’t know what to say to that, in a group as huge and diverse as the white population of America is, you aren’t going to do a whole lot better than that.
