Justice Ministry: Rav Lior is Not Above the Law

The Ministry of Justice issued a statement Tuesday justifying the arrest of Rav Dov Lior Monday as he was driving down a highway. “No one is above the law,” the Ministry stated, and refused to apologize for what many called an "abduction."

The arrest caused fury in the religious-Zionist sector, with some demanding an official apology.

"The arrest warrant against Rav Lior was issued a long time ago with the knowledge and approval of the Attorney General, the State Attorney and the Prosecution, after Rav Lior refused to show up for questioning," the statement explained.

“In a state where the rule of law prevails, in which presidents, prime ministers, ministers, Knesset Members, religious sages and prominent public figures have been questioned by police, no one is above the law and no one may see himself as exempt from the obligation to show up for police questioning.”

“Despite this, there were contacts between… the office of the Attorney General and various people, and the Rabbi was invited to show up for questioning in a respectable and quiet manner. These attempts received negative responses and so there was no choice but to issue the arrest warrant.”

A nation of laws restricts and limits the authority of law enforcement officials. These same officials never interdict Muslim Imans who openly incite violence. Why do they insist that Rabbis who publish theological treatises are more dangerous? When those who enforce the laws are themselves not subject to the law there is tyranny.

Well said. Or where the enforcers of laws are completely one-sided and single out one group for strict, rigorous enforcement, while letting the other side openly flaunt their defiance with impunity, then you have bigotry. In Israel, supposedly the Jewish State, does that one-sided enforcement go against Jews. Zionism as practiced isn’t racism, but suicidal self-hatred. How can they expect Abu Mazzan to recognize it as a Jewish state, when our own Attorney General does not.
