A correspondent for the liberal magazine The Nation is reporting that CNN and CBS have sent camera crews to join the new Gaza flotilla preparing to set sail from Greece in order to break an Israeli navy blockade. He also says hes heard the New York Times has sent a reporter.
The messages came from Joseph Dana, who is in Greece and will be riding along with the flotilla, and his Twitter account.
At first glance, it might not seem odd that major news outlets are supposedly sending crews to cover the flotilla considering the debacle that ensued when the previous one tried to break the blockade last year. But Commentary points out why this might be concerning:
While its hard to blame reporters for seeking out a colorful story, they should realize by joining the activists on the boat they are actually making themselves a part of the story. They will be with the flotilla when it attempts to violate international law by trying to break Israels legally-established naval blockade. And they could potentially interfere with the Israeli militarys ability to do its job if IDF soldiers are forced to board the ships.
But the unfortunate downside is these reporters are giving the flotilla activists exactly what theyre aiming for media attention. Seeing as theres no humanitarian reason for the flotilla (which is even more obvious now that the Egyptian border with Gaza has been opened), its only point is to generate publicity. The activists are sure to receive a lot of media coverage this time around and they wont even have to resort to stabbing soldiers to get it.
As an interesting side note, one of the boats in the flotilla group is called the Audacity of Hope.
Reporters making themselves part of a story? As if this were something new?
Passengers and Crew aboard the "Audacity of Hope."
Old commies, mostly.
Too easy. I’ll leave it alone.
And I can imagine in a few days time, we’ll be reading or watching the following in the NYTimes, CNN, & CBS...
“We are in mourning today at the loss of our colleague...”
Looks target rich to me
I wonder if Lara Logan will be one of the CBS journalists covering this media stunt?
One well placed torpedo would solve a multitude of problems.
Now I feel better.
Syria has ports they should go and help them.
Do I hear “twofer”? Good shooting, IDF!
Reporters from CNN, CBS, and the NY Times?
Even more reason to sink the boat ;)
Didn’t the Gaza-bound ship Juliano claimed sabotaged at the Greek port with damaged propeller shaft?
They need to invite MSNBC to join them.
Perfect Human Shields. Torpedo Loose!
they should realize by joining the activists on the boat they are actually making themselves a part of the story. Also making themselves part of a science experiment -- "can cameras work underwater?"
Sink them and leave the remains for the sharks!
Take no prisioners!
The fifth column masquerading as the fourth estate.
Cant they jam their satellite signal and confiscate any equipment including voice recorders?
