Seriously, hope you all are safe...
Visibility is about a mile or two. Smoke could affect peoples breathing We are about 55 miles north east Thanks for the thoughts.
as the crow flies from LANL
A lot of your smoke could be from the Pacheco fire at the Santa Fe ski basin.
I too would love to see Alaska from my Harley. I still have my Road King Classic, but I am 62 now with too many health issues, and I recognize that I shouldn’t make the long runs anymore.
I hope to tow our Airstream camp trailer on a visit to Alaska... it won’t be the same fun as it would be on a bike..nothing is for me, but it should still be fun.
As for the bike, at least I have the memories, wonderful memories. ;>)
Sorry about post #43... it was meant to land on a different planet. LOL
That was my first thought also.
I lived in Los Alamos during the Cerro Grande fire back in 2000. I remember being ordered to evacuated(it took all day) and being relatively isolated from the news and so I did not know if my home would be destroyed.
I of course still have family back in Los Alamos, they are all fine, but ill be watching this story very closely.
“The difference in numbers (400 families vs. 235 homes) is that a lot of the homes destroyed were duplexes and four-plexes in use from the earliest days of the lab.”
Yep Up on the town-site the U.S. Government built a bunch of duplex housing. This was back in FDR’s central planning days. Of course I’ve always found them houses ugly and inconvenient. But some people have just ended up buying up both sides of the building and merged them.
Cool....checking EBay for cheap laptops!
Stay safe Cooter. When I was working at Bandelier, going into White Rock was a big deal :)
We’d go to pizza hut after being in the backcountry for over a week. Then we’d get supplies at Smiths for the upcoming week and go back to the park.
Ah the summer without a car...
“Considering that this happened the last time on Clinton’s watch and Hazel OLeary and now we have an even greater leftist in charge, the thought definitely crossed my mind.”
Careful with that line of thought, Back in 2000 Garry Johnson was Governor.
Sadly, the Pizza Hut in White Rock has gone out of business. And so has the McDonalds, believe it or not. Smiths is still around.

That Pizza hut is closed now, but the McDonalds they built across the street(also closed) became a homerun Pizza.
May all your preparation be unnecessary.
That’s too bad. First time in my life I had green chile on a pizza.
My buddy from NC is opening up a BBQ joint in the old Katherine's restaurant in WR next month. It will be called Kenny's NC BBQ.
Early reports are that the fire was caused by a downed power line...
Here's a picture from 2007. That is a picnic table and a grill in the distance. I have fond memories of the place. I hope the fire didn't start there.
Prayers up please for the Mulane family at Dixons orchard. It is at La Canada at the bottom of the map. News said the family house might have burned. They already lost this years apple crop because of the late freeze. They are nice people.

Just heard on KKOB that a friend just left Dixon’s. She said the orchard was saved but several buildings burned - out buildings and such.
Also said she has a cabin in the canyon above Dixon’s and there’s about 27 up there - she said they were all gone.
Also heard they are telling Cochiti residents to pack and be ready to evacuate. Not telling them to leave yet, but you know it must be imminent - wind was just said to be 60 MPH up there tonight.
They’ve already burned a fire break along state road 4. The lab and most of Los Alamos county should be OK. I’d be more worried about the Jemez communities.
I’m sitting tight right now in White Rock, just on the other side of Bandelier. I’m packed and ready to bug out, if necessary.

Just heard on KKOB there is a ‘spot fire’ whatever that is, at the lab and that the big fire is extremely close although they are saying there is no danger from the nuclear materials in case of the lab catching fire.
