I only have historical references to offer, but in my family it wasn’t pretty. Frontier era in western NC, 1750’s, warring and raids by the Cherokee were common. But, intermarriage was not altogether uncommon, especially amongst the Scotch-Irish. My seventh great grandmother was Cherokee, her husband and my 7g grandfather Scotch-Irish, their son mixed. The Cherokee came and took her and her son, which was unusual. They usually killed the white settlers. Ugly as that sounds, it had an element of tit-for-tat, the French and Indian War was quite the tangle and blood was on the hands of both sides, as well as the English and Continental interests, which kept things in perpetual turmoil for any number of years.

But, to get back to what happened, My 7g went with the militia led by Hugh Waddell to try and retrieve them. They went up the Dan River toward the Cherokee town. He was killed. His wife was never heard from again. His son, my 6g was retrieved, now an orphan. He was bound out at the Court of Pleas and Quarters to Benjamin Merrell, later captain of the Regulators, who was himself killed, hung, drawn and quartered after the Battle of Alamance. They wanted to make an example of him. It was a rough, complicated time, some had to grow up well before their time, and saw things no child should ever see.

The peace was hard-won and there were still conflicts for close to a century after this being far from an unheard of situation. People who had both ancestries helped matters some, but had their own problems with being rejected by both sides as “other” and only had themselves, often living in isolation in the mountains, in their own enclaves. Mountain clannishness wasn’t always just a peculiarity of the people themselves, sometimes it was a necessity and ugliness ensued if you ever tried to break out of it.

It appears to me, that when you have a culture clash of that magnitude, they just have to fight it out eventually. That’s just my observation, but is by no means something I’d ever advocate.

Back to the modern era, there have been agitators on both sides, egging this on since before the Civil War. A major element of that era was the fear of an uprising like Haiti, which was and is a nightmare in and of itself. Those fears in turn provoked draconian behavior toward blacks, then the Civil War itself and more ugliness during the Reconstruction era, which provoked resentments that are nursed to this day. Lest you think it was entirely just a bunch of sore loser former Confederates taking it out on poor, defenseless black folks, realize that positions of power and influence were awarded to former slaves, that former Confederates were not able to vote for a number of years and so had no say in this governance, and that corruption and theft were the inevitable result. Sounds a little like what’s been developing over the past several decades, come to think of it.

Speaking of politics, the political element of all this cannot be overlooked. Those resentments were well-earned and were not misplaced, but they were seized upon by leftist agitators, yes, communists, even though concern over that reality has been so thoroughly stereotyped and tinfoiled that it’s difficult to make the claim and be taken seriously. These communist agitators jumped onto the backs of black people and rode their righteous anger into power over a period of decades. Now, it’s gotten to the point that we’re the ones with second class status, and we’re the majority. Weird, isn’t it? Equality has never been the objective, destruction of the political system has been, and whites have been the primary target because we created and supported that political system. Truth is, we’re all targets but some are more useful in helping bring it all down in the interim. There’s a shock in store for all the tinpot revolutionaries, I’ve got news for them. Any student of history knows this as well. But, for now, the illusion of gaining some upper hand within the existing system remains.

I don’t see an easy answer to all this. I’ve held out hope that our common Christianity would provide the means to heal the situation, but now we have another set of agitators introduced into the mix, radical Islamists, of the homegrown Nation of Islam variety as well as a more exotic and violent import, which would be comical if it weren’t so potentially bloody, since they were historically the big slavers in Africa and in fact are still enslaving black Christians in the Sudan.

Logic doesn’t enter into it. I just don’t know anymore. I’m afraid it’s beyond repair.

I doubt if your daughter-in-law and your grandson will be marching down the street yelling “kill all whiteys”.

How about I rephrase my statement to “..there is a militant black vs. ALL white folks war coming soon.”

Certainly you don’t think that our black FReeper friends will suddenly wage war against white people? I think you knew what I meant.

Introduce them to Christ. Then let God’s grace sustain them.
