It was imperfectly odd. It was strangely unsettling. It was uniquely American.
On a balmy early Saturday summer evening, the U.S soccer team played for a prestigious championship in a U.S. stadium and was smothered in boos. Its fans were vastly outnumbered. Its goalkeeper was bathed in a chanted obscenity. Even its national anthem was filled with the blowing of air horns and bouncing of beach balls.
Most of these hostile visitors didn't live in another country. Most, in fact, were not visitors at all, many of them being U.S. residents whose lives are here but whose sporting souls remain elsewhere.
Welcome to another unveiling of that social portrait known as a U.S.-Mexico soccer match, streaked as always in deep colors of red, white, blue, green and gray.
"I love this country, it has given me everything that I have, and I'm proud to be part of it," said Victor Sanchez, a 37-year-old Monrovia resident wearing a Mexico jersey. "But yet, I didn't have a choice to come here, I was born in Mexico, and that is where my heart will always be."

I wonder how many of those fans were illegals...
>”But yet, I didn’t have a choice to come here,
Yup. The “but” patriots. You boo the country which made you rich and you are still loyal to the country that has drug cartels as it’s leaders. And they are asking why Americans are mad at them..
Most Americans don’t get into soccer, that’s why the crowd was predominantly for Mexico. So what if a predominantly illegal alien crowd booed the USA. The only regret is that INS wasn’t there to make a huge round up.
Too bad Eisenhower isn’t president.
You think anyone here cares? Soccer is gay. So either you don't care one whit, or you do . . . and soccer is not gay after all.
but but but, they only want to become citizens, they pay taxes, so they have the “right” to boo...ah ah ah....their just Mexicans being Mexicans....why do you ugly Americans want to change their culture?
Coming to a town near you....

Great deal of thought went into that booing. Thank heavens they were from south of the boarder.
they are not here to become Americans, they are here to make it part of Mexico.
Soccer, at this level, is twenty-some extremely fit twenty-somethings running around on a huge field and feigning life-threatening at the slightest brush of contact. Best left to the Mexicans, be they legal or criminal.
feigning life-threatening injury
No it wasn't. It was soccer, and as Hank Hill says "Soccer is a sport invented by European women to give them something to do while their men cooked."
The last time Mexico went up against Team USA in a match that really mattered, it ended with the Treaty of Hidalgo. Want to try us again, Meh-hee-co?
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
LOL--I wish someone with that attitude could bother themselves to show up and cheer for their national team.
“Soccer is a sport invented by European women to give them something to do while their men cooked.”
One of the funniest episodes (and I like international soccer); I liked the coach’s line (I’m paraphrasing): “Relax, guys; we already got the tie!”
Then Bobby decides he’d rather be on a losing football team than a winning soccer team...
People with that patriotic attitude are not going to be attending a soccer game. As someone has noted above, the "ick" factor that soccer has disqualifies it from being a truly American activity.
So, in other words, “Scouts in . . . Cavalry Dismount?”
