Rep. Giffords should resign her seat (CNN)
CNN ^ | June 24, 2011 | Paul Sracic

Posted on 06/24/2011 6:53:04 PM PDT by Paul Kib

(CNN) -- In the months since the shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, reports about her condition have been sparse. We have learned of a follow-up surgery to repair her skull and that she was recently released from a rehabilitation hospital...

...Should the media and the public be so reluctant to demand more information? The Arizona Democrat is not just a private citizen; she is a sitting member of Congress. Do Giffords' responsibilities demand a more searching inquiry into her health? No one is asking this question because it seems moot...

...In reality, the congresswoman is not carrying out any of these responsibilities. Even from the limited information that has been made available, we know that for the near term Giffords cannot carry out her committee assignments, debate on the floor of the House, and, most importantly cast a vote. The result is that for all intents and purposes, the gunman's bullet that so severely injured Giffords also silenced the people of Arizona's 8th Congressional District. Isn't the obvious solution for her to resign and allow Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer to call a special election to fill her seat?...

...Being a member of Congress, however, is also a job. More than that, it is a job that lies at the heart of our democracy. Although we all wish Giffords a swift and full recovery, we also wish the nearly 650,000 residents of her district to be represented in Congress. While her staff may still be in place, being assisted no doubt by other members of Congress, the staff cannot vote.

Of course I read all of that (I don’t watch TV very often). I didn’t pay any attention to it as I knew it was a bunch of lies—and I don’t get a lot bent out of shape over what the liberal media says.

Truth will always will out...........

Uh... people in her district are not happy about having no representation. I’ve heard from some, have you?

“if the people of her district are comfortable with her leave of absence for medical treatment”

I’m from her district. If she had integrity, she would resign. She has none. But then, she didn’t care about our opinions BEFORE she was shot, either. She made that very obvious at her townhalls - AFTER we held protests outside her office to get her to come to her district and talk to us. She held on for a 1% victory in Nov 2010.

IIRC, finishing her term qualifies her for a pension.

I'm also in her district and the above is very well put.

100% correct. She got re-elected sounding like a conservative (D), but then voted the straight Pelosi vote - except when SanFraNan gave her permission to vote no when a bill had enough votes to pass.

That explains a lot.

Although her recovery has been amazing....she is still not, nor will ever be capable of being a member of the House. She should resign so the people of her district can be represented...even if it is a Democrat. The people have a constitutional right to be represented in the House.

If a POTUS was incapacitated as she is, he/she would have been replaced by the VP. The same should go for any incapacitated member of the House or Senate.

Her mentals are just fine but she can’t walk unassisted and she can barely speak.

Isn’t she not even able to talk? I think she should just not worry about it for now. I was recently sick for a long time and in and out of the hospital. My boss called me and got on to me a little for not telling him everything that was going on. It was the farthest thing from my mind, worrying about my job.

She should focus on recovering and people should leave her to it or try to help.

“Maxine Waters is the true metric whether one is in such a vegatative state as to force retirement”

I agree that Maxine is a limbo bimbo, but even she gets topped by the Dem Representative in Georgia who thought that relocating the U.S. Marines from Okinawa to the small island of Guam would capsize it.

That’s my point. I truly think people would be wise to leave her off limits. My recovery from a bad illness was very difficult and I’d imagine her’s will be exceedingly more so. She shouldn’t have any added pressure.

I'm rooting for her too but that doesn't mean she should be a paid Congresscritter....

its indelicate but in a sensible society with sensible people, she would have stepped down gracefully.

Maybe he’s going to go sock this “writer” in the nose and didn’t want NASA’s name attached to his actions.

Every Congressman affects all legislation. And, they are all paid by the federal government. So it does go beyond the people of AZ-8.

While this situation is tragic for Giffords and her family, it does leave an entire Congressional District without representation in Congress.

you know, we had rats and the dummies on the dummie board PRAYING for Reagan to die, or Strom, and daily, you could find the hopes and prayers and threats against pubs.....

its not "un-nice" of us to have speaking, talking, thinking, clear headed representatives...

and although it may not be the district we live in, in actuality, the House passes bills that affects ALL of us....
